What Are Upvotes?

Upvotes are a Reddit thing, it's just a tally of how many people find something interesting or helpful. Unsure how they will apply it here but you can do things like raise up the most upvoted comments in a thread to make them more visible. It gives you an idea of the popularity of a posting or comment.

I think it could work if you a thread was made to "Poll" the post with most upvotes is at the top of the poll.

@kingsqueak Thanks for the explanation. I thought that “likes” functioned similarly. In terms of “raising posts” with a certain number of upvotes, how does that work on Reddit? Is it a member based function or an administrative one?

I find the upvoting (on Reddit) in many cases a self-fulfilling prophecy, and subject to "mob mentality". Albeit, not always the case... Upvoting is the latest social trend for those who may be lacking critical thinking/research skills to make decisions. Maybe a better term would be "crowdsourcing", but hard to justify that in certain cases when mobs of people are on the same (wrong) opinion.

For example: Johnny complains that his new $3000 airgun does not work out of the box and posts it on the forum. Since the brand of his airgun and the distributor that sold him came up unfavorably in the forum a few times before many members blame them. They pile on with negative stories and assumptions, and when a lone sober voice suggests that there may be something Johnny missed with his new airgun setup, that person gets voted down for being a tool for the manufacturer/distributor. His "voice" now all but disappeared in the maze of hundreds or thousands of other posts, while the loudest and most vial voice(s) rise to the top. Then Johnny breaks the news that he forgot/did not know he had to charge up his new airgun.'s batteries.

(If you like my post, please upvote!)

It’s a member driven system. A popular post rises and an unpopular one falls down the list.
