HW/Weihrauch What barrel length will give highest velocity for the Weihrauch HW80 in .25 cal?

Good data! I also have a FAC Fenix 400, in .22 cal. It has a full-length 370mm / 14.5" barrel and it shoots 18.5 fpe with 14.3 gr.

The Fenix 400 has a whopping 25 % longer stroke than the HW80, but a smaller chamber ID by four millimeters. In swept volume, the HW80 is a hair bigger than the Cometa.
I'm going to have to re-chrono the 22 and 25 tonight after work. I was going from memory but its been a couple months and I've hit my head a few times since then 😆

Having two different guns of the same model in different calibers may not be the best comparison unless you had several of each. There's alot of variables that can skew results. Some guns of the same model with same inards can still have a fair difference in efficiency with the same caliber. For example I have three 177 Hw30s with the same spring and seals and everyone is a little different. Simply some barrels and compression tubes work better than others. The best way to do it to use the same exact gun with no other charges but different barrels. Even then some barrels net better or worse than the same part number barrel made a day later.

I'd guess it's likely a smaller caliber would benefit the most from a longer barrel because the smaller cross section would require more length to consume all the swept volume and equalize pressure. Also fwiw a longer stroke with similar volume may work better than one with a larger bore. Using similar hydraulic principles I'd think the larger bore would have more frontal resistance than a smaller bore. The longer stroke smaller piston might push longer against less less resistance, less likely to bounce and be more efficient. Weihrauch came out with the R9 after the R1. They reduced the piston diameter considerably from 30mm to 26mm while increasing the stroke only 5mm. A 177 R9 made 15 fpe when the much bigger and heavier 177 R1 only made 17 fpe.

One reputed downside to long stroke piston guns is they are more hold sensitive. I can't personally verify that but it is logical. This is interesting stuff to me and while much of my opinions are just that, I have swapped barrels and compared efficiency and shot cycles on the same exact gun. I have run my R1 in 177, 20 and 22. I have also run my Hw95 in 177 and 20.

Fun stuff when the only way to know the truth of any of this is to experiment. I dig it.

That is an excellent point. I'm about to have almost 80 of them in my living room from the group from the group buy so I can swap some barrels around and see what happens.

Airshot, did you shorten a full-length HW80 barrel? The 3.5 inches would make it really close to the basic K barrel, which is 410mm (16.1") in length. The K barrel tapped for a moderator is a whopping 100mm shorter than that, or just a hair over a foot in length.
Yes as I coykd not find any carbine length barrels. There was a shortage of them at the time. Wanted to try not having a choke anyway.

Wow that's some group buy. I couldn't find 80 people into springers if I tried much less get them to comit to spending that kind of money. Kudos to you.

It was across 5 different forums and even then it wasn't actually 80 people. Some ordered multiple and I took in some extras just in case some other people were interested but skeptical of some weird dude running a random group buy. I know my BS detector would be going off a hair. They are some pretty decent guns though so I just thought some more budget minded people would appreciate a few more options other than the typical plastic guns that seem to flood that market these days. Plus I have spare parts for them all which is something we can't say about another certain brand...

So what rifles did you get for the group buy?

If you go on Cometas website pretty much at least one of all the springers. The 300s and 400s were most popular though. Theres probly 50 of those in different variations. I ended up turning to the darkside and grabbing two of those laminate Lynx V10 PCPs for myself. The new ones are shipping with a 300bar 700cc bottle. My biggest complaint with PCP was having to refill. With that bottle size and tuned down to reasonable power I can probably shoot all day. Plus I want to give PCP class a try in FT. 2 birds, 1 stone.

What is the point of those .25" ? And at that bore a longer barrel will not yield higher power. For higher power with a longer barrel you'll need a bigger gun as the Beeman Kodiak, Gamo Hunter 1250 or so at least.
My 80 @ 0.22 does 23 ftlbs. with the H+N FTT and the Weihrauch (JSB) lead free. It does quite fine without too much slam and no vibes at all
