What brand of pellet or slug is made out of pure lead?

Probably not anymore, most are an alloy of some sort. Pure lead is no longer politically correct. Cant say for positive but I dont think todays political enviroment would allow pure lead anything.

I'm pretty sure you're incorrect there and just wanting to make it political. 2%-5% alloy has nothing to do with politics. Generally, the laws are lead vs lead free.

Other metals are added to lead projectiles to help the lead fill the mold better (wetting) and prevent oxidization of the projectile.

H&N slugs are pure lead as well, as per their email a year ago.

JSB pellets are pretty soft lead, but most manufacturers choose to add a higher antimony content than JSB.

Harder pellets get less damaged in transport and when loading. They have an easier time to punch through the bones of a quarry's head.

The composition of alloy used is a trade secret that no one would disclose, usually custom order to best fit their desired results. Pure lead is simply too soft to not have damage during manufacturing, in transit or even packaging so it’s always some sort of alloy but 97-99% lead could be considered just about pure lead if you ask me. It’s not like I’ll call crosman pellets aren’t lead, notice they can show up in just about any packaging and pellets are usually fine? It’s by design not green peace.

But be ware the tree huggers will go bat sh!t crazy on you if you get rid of the last percent! LMAO!!!

I doubt you will find much commercially available pure lead (99.9%) ammo, but will find soft lead. Casting pure lead consistently is difficult. FWIW I use about 2% tin. Even NSA uses 1% tin for swaged ammo with his insanely accurate presses, but still giving them a BHN of only 6. Pure lead (99.9%) is closer to 5. Some manufacturers use antimony and not tin, some maybe even both or even bismuth or some cheap chinesium. There is also the cnc’d slugs to consider. Not sure how that process would be affected by hardness, but even still, pure lead is generally considered too soft.

The anti-lead movement is strong in the EU. There is a bill proposed to ban it. Definitely another topic/thread to consider as the pellet and slug market demands would drastically change. Maybe the guys here from across the pond would enlighten us to the lead ban push.

Thanks for the replys. I bought some lead wire from Corbin to make slugs with and it's 99.95% lead according to their website.

Ayup and 99.95% of some brands of pellets are pure lead as well. I like soft pellets.

Why? Soft lead engages the rifling better. Soft lead swages better when you are making very small thin skirts etc... Soft lead seals the bore better. I don't know of ANY commercial vendor of pellets that is casting them. They are universally swaged in presses. Maybe some folks are adding a percent or so of tin. The hardest pellets I've seen in years are the Crossmans. Those things probably have more tin in them than anything else on the market.

Back in the day it was rumored that things like tire weights (which have a bit of tin) could not be used to cast lead bullets for muzzle loaders... I think that one has been put to bed.

Anyway, I am an idiot and don't have a clue so ... You figure it out.
