i plan just to use my airguns for target shooting.I also plan on getting into some events next year.I also want to shoot targets out to 50-65 yards what caliber of pellet do i want so i know what cal. of airguns to get.
It depends on what events you might partake in? If you will shoot FT(field target) then .177 is what you want. If you are going to shoot BR(benchrest) then it depends and .177-.30 could work. Any caliber will work for punching paper out to 50-65 yards.
If you know what type of target shooting you are going to try, it might pay to have look at the rules, some may have calibre or energy restrictions, this may decide what calibre you choose. Or perhaps go along to a target shoot and ask some questions, I find most shooters are only too happy to offer good advice.
.177. No reason to shoot heavier pellets just for target shooting unless you have matches that accomodate them, which are few and far between. Official BR rules allow up to .22, but in my opinion, .177s are more accurate.
Most competitions allow .177. Extremely benchrest is the one that has multi caliber events. Depending on the kind of events you want to participate in, you can decide the caliber. .if you plan on getting a gun which is flexible for both 50-150 yards, the .25 will suffice. You can shoot the .177 well within 60 yards. Anything over 60 yards to 80 yards I would suggest the .22. Anything beyond 80 yards go for a .25. The 30 cal is good but there is significant drop given the weight of the pellet. If you shoot in windy conditions choose between the .25 and the .30.
