What Do Squirrels Like To Eat Most?

+1 for peanuts. But the birds and squirrels go bonkers for peanuts. Maybe a mix of corn and peanuts and other seeds, for cost savings.

This is a only seen once kinda thing but my wife’s grandma said a squirrel was eating her birds off the feeder. I don’t know if it was actually eating them or just killing birds cuz you know squirrels are a lil nutty. Anyway she gave it a sliver of domed shaped lead.

I can't keep my local squirrel population out of my pot fields. And you know how much TONNAGE a colony of squirrels consumes every growing season?

Peanuts & safflower seeds. Safflower seeds are small so the squirrel is constantly moving its head as it grabs a new one. Peanuts in the shell take longer to consume and will give you ample time to make a clean shot.
Pecans on the tree are like crack to squirrels. I once shot 4 squirrels in succession from the same pecan tree. 2 of the squirrels were on the same branch!

I am trying to build up the population of squirrels in my area , I have seen as many as four in one time, I have put out Chicken scratch grain, Hole deer corn, Even wild bird seed which is expensive , Never seen a squirrel come back to eat? Not sure how they even got here in West Texas, Someones wood pile they hauled in for fire wood?
They are off the shooting list until I see there numbers grow a little, Pretty sure there red not gray squirrels , One looked black?

For Eastern Grays: Assuming you are asking about feeding.
Number 1: Whole peanuts in shell.
Number 2: Black oil sunflower seed.
Black oil is economical and they shell each one before they eat the seed.

I found the squirrels like pistachios also whole peanuts almonds anything in the shell, let alone sunflower seeds bird seed. my wife got me a bag of sunflower seeds to plant so I cant wait to see them in the summer. people across the street grew some and the birds were also plentiful. seems like this year the sparrows are very thick here at my house as I got 3 feeders out lol. shot one yesterday at 23 yards with a 18gr jsb at 890 fps out of my uragan compact and smack down was great.

Good man Douger! They tear up the lawns a lot in spring a lot of damage not to mention getting into a house causing house fires from electrical wires chewed etc

Nut & Berry bird food from Walmart (Pennington brand $8-19) works the very best for me. Ya they like whole peanuts ok and will gladly grab a couple and run. Seems they all like the Nut & Berry, but especially the Pregnant females and/or adolescents, they really prefer the nut&berry. Munching, sitting pretty and predictable, right there at the bait station.
I assume you're asking what bait to use that attracts them best and gives you the best shot at your bait station. This is my take after decades of pesting...
Most squirrels see a peanut and grab it then run. They might for a second or 2 move the peanut around in their mouth before taking off to a distant obscured branch, a ''safer' feeling spot to munch the whole peanut . Not great for a good head shot. As not many nutters will hang right there at your bait station feeling safe/eating whole peanuts. BUT, A pile of nut&berry they just can't leave alone. Eating each individual seed/nut/berry in the exact same position not even moving their head till its time for another mouthful to munch. Yup they sit there at your perfect predetermined distance in exactly the spot you choose for your best most humane head shot... and if you go back at dusk, any rats in the area will be there ready for a 18g.
So to me, whole peanuts while a favorite squirrel food, not so good for a pesting bait station. Nut & Berry bird food its like potato chips or pistachios to us. Actually pistachios are in Nut&Berry mix as is black sunflower seeds... A little noise that would normally spook them,, they don't even hear when munching on nut & berry mix....
If you really want to attract them from the whole surrounding area, set up a bird feeder every morning with the same mix with some trees close by. If you're lucky, first thing in the morning a bird feeding frenzy with birds flying all around, and fighting for position squawking away at the feeder is like the call of the wild for nutters, they follow the birds like the pied piper....
Suppose if you're trying to raise herds of nutters, the vitamins and minerals added to Nut&Berry mix for the birds might help the health of your nutters. Mine are big and fat since using the mix for the last couple years, and multiply like crazy. Seems no matter how many I take out a new crew appears immediately .....

That’s a great post! And funny too. I saw here one time a guy said he had a great place, one year he got 302 say, next year 314, the next year 345. It’s like no matter what these things breed like rabbits and the cull just keeps them under control rather than eliminate them ...that won’t happen

You can put acorns way up on the list . Tons of large old oak trees on my property and i could sit on my deck and shoot 10 or more a day and plenty more left if i wanted to.
