What does this do?

I was curious if anyone knows what this is. And what it's for? This is on the bottom of a Hawke Airmax. I'm curious if it's an adjustment of some type or just a plug for the purging of atmospheric air and filling with nitrogen? Any ideas???

I'd agree nitrogen.. and I wouldn't want to remove the plug but if someone had a busted scope, would be interesting to see what is behind the plug.. just curious how they get the nitrogen in, air out and sealed..
we have a small nitrogen tank I've used for purging welding but mostly used for storing food, like nuts.. find a case of like pistachio and put it in jars or even a good 5 gallon bucket with a good sealing lid..
I have a probe I put to the bottom.. nitrogen being heavy than air.. and then I put a tea candle in a soup dipper and turn on the nitrogen until the candle goes out.. nuts stay nice and tasty and salty for several years.. although they are usually ate by the next year when they are on sale again..

so just curious how they do scopes.. is there a full port and a bleed port or do they rely on gravity like I do..
thanks for sharing the picture.. would be very interested if anyone else has insight.. myself I don't remember seeing a plug like that.. and I always wondered how they made them..🤔🤔
guess it's why when I was a kid I took everything broken apart to see how it worked 🤣

I know scope manufacturer don't include it in the scopes dimensions thing and order a mount and that plug hit / not enough clearance by a fraction of a mm and could not mount the scope . I was pi$$ed..🤤
I had the same problem with the Burris posi- lock on a couple of instances.
As much as I hated to do it. I just milled a section out of the base...OUCH
