What is your "Go-to" rifle? The one just come to "first in your mind" in like survival situation, not second guessing/overthinking. And of course, no powder burner.
1st: RWS Diana 48 in .22 simple, affordable than AA, HW and no need for support equipment: pump, compressor, tank, scope, etc. Just rifle and some tins of pellets.

So a black bear decided your lunch and charges you, let's not even fantasize about a brown Grizzly, unless you a poised and ready and you get a direct brain shot, you have what? 1 good shot, then 1 sub power shot, then one really sub powered shot, depending on your air rifle?ALL as the bear is charging you and how long does it take to reload aim and fire, in this survival situation? How far do you think the bear would be before it decided to charge? Do you know how much land a black bear can cover at a dead run? Unless all the stars align, he will get to you long before he is dead...even if mortally wounded, because that's what wild animals do.
I'll rely on a AR10 and a whole bunch of freedom seeds, and a whole bunch of holes if I had a choice in that scenario.🐻
Shoot it in the privates. I am sure it will lose interest in you.

Well, I was going to start a new thread dealing with air rifles for survival, I appears someone beat me to it which is good, saves me allot of typing, allot of good suggestions in this thread, and I haven't looked in on the others yet.
Personally I'm a big fan of the .22 caliber rim fire round inc. the magnums, but in some instances where stealth is required a good quality air rifle in the 12 FPE plus is a suitable substitute in my opinion, I'm not going to make any suggestions as everyone has their own favorites and their own requirements.
I have a pretty modest collection of firearms, muzzle loaders and air rifles, and in my opinion the situation usually dictates the choice of tool needed, power generally is the first consideration, for me consistent and repeatable accuracy is primary with power coming in a close second.
I have two dedicated small game hunting foraging air rifles, the first is my GAMO Gen-2 Swarm wood stocked .22 cal. Bone Collector, it's fairly accurate at 30 yds. and under, fairly light weight, and carries a very reliable 10 shot magazine, and delivers about 15~18 FPE depending on the pellet used.
My second hunting air rifle choice is my Crosman Vantage NP in .177 caliber, normally I'd prefer .20 cal. or .22 cal. for this purpose but the Vantage is match target accurate at 50 yds. and under, and with a 10.5 gr. domed pellet delivers about 900+FPS for an energy rating of about 19 FPE, with a combination of that kind of accuracy and power in a rifle that's in the eight pound weight range and comfortable ergonomics, it's pretty hard to beat.
I did have to replace the scopes on both rifles and smooth out the factory lawyer triggers they came with, but it was doable and not very labor intensive.
