What scope are you using.

I'm still learning about FT a lot myself but what I can say is that hunter class ( which is what I've shot once only so far ) your limited to 16X on the scope. Illuminated reticle is recommended but not a requirement. ( some targets could be in densely shaded areas, hard to see, etc . . . where illuminated would help ). MOA or MIL - I don't think that would really matter - just know your scope and hold overs / ranging to pre-measured distances.

Scopes are a very big part of it.

MOA vs MIL isn't that big of a factor. Reliable clicking (if you'll be shooting in a class that allows it) or a good reticle for precise holdovers (if you'll be shooting in Hunter class) are bigger factors than MOA vs MIL.

I was in the 85-90% knockdown rate at our monthly matches for quite a while, using 20x SWFA scopes, which aren't a very common FT scope.

I bought a Falcon X50 and, with the same gun, went to the 90-100% knockdown rate. The X50 is kinda like the cheaper version of the big Sightron 10-50.

So, you can do quite well with a scope that you're really familiar with, whether it's a scope that's considered a FT scope or not, but for top of the leaderboard scores on a regular basis, you'll need one that ranges by focus extremely well. I'd say that's the most important attribute of an FT scope, ability to range by focus, CONSISTENTLY.

One thing to note is that, in general, a scope will be clearer towards the middle of it's magnification range rather than at it's maximum.

So, at 16x a 10-50x scope is going to be near where it's clearest and a 4-16x scope at 16x is going to be near where it's the least clearest.

Getting a scope where 16x is not the limit of the magnification would be advantageous for HFT I would think. What do others think about this?

BTW, I shoot open class and use a Sightron Slll l0-50x. It ranges very well.

What is the accepted norm? MOA or mil? Power level, illuminated or not? Sightron or ? Suggested? Once I learn a little I'll probably have a lot more question!

What is the accepted norm? MOA or mil?

I would say that MOA is more acceptable in the USA and Mill everywhere else. But as stated in above posts it just doesn't matter which you choose once you are accustomed to it and there are plenty of Mil scopes used in the USA as well.

My SWFA is a 3-15 power and good for 100-150 yards or a bit more for me and I use it at 12 power My Aztecs are 5-25 and good for 200+ yards easy and I use them at 20 power

Illumination is good for hunting at dusk and dawn and anytime there a low light situation other wise they just add weight and complexity to the scope.

Don't have a Sightron but I have two Aztec scopes as well as, SWFA, Falcon, Hawke and UTG scopes. The Falcon, Hawke and UTG units all have loose eyepieces but the Aztec and SWFA are holding up fine. Love the Aztec reticle.

The direct answer to your question is that I shoot in either the open or WFTF division is field target and there is no power limit for the scope and we are permitted to adjust the scope settings for each shot. This is unlike Hunter division where scope power is limited to 16X and no scope adjustments are made during the match so the shooter must hold over or under their zero depending an range. Anyway my scopes are recycled silhouette scopes that are leupold VariX III 6.5-20X EFR scopes that have been modified to 18-40X. They have the parallax adjustment on the objective lens at the front of the scope. These are nice clear scopes but they are no longer available and truthfully are no ideal for field target but I still use them.

Regardless of the division you choose to shoot in you should get a scope that you can focus down to 10 yard and one with a side wheel focus. In FT some targets are set close and the side wheel makes it easier to focus. Higher power scopes help you range find better so if you are shooting open or WFTF you want a higher power scope. Most shooters use anywhere from 32 to 60X scopes. In the 2019 worlds WFTF match Sightron was the most popular brand of scope. You can google the equipment list for more info. If you are shooting hunter division you are limited to using 16X maximum but you can have a higher power scope and just set it at 16X for the match. In Hunter Division you cannot make adjustments to your scope so you must hold over or under your scope zero as distance requires so your reticle design is important and added dots, hash marks, etc. are important to you.

I hope this makes sense to you. The scope is actually more important than the rifle choice in field target. Knowing distance and sight settings are the keys to doing well, of course in addition to basic marksmanship.

I've always gone for the inexpensive stuff myself, I think one of my favorite's is a Leapers 4-16x swat scope, I just mounted it back on my Liberty recently but due to the weather I haven't been to the woods lately but soon I hope. I only hunt in woods though and the fields that I can hunt there aren't too big so I don't need a lot of magnification either. I also have a BSA scope that I've always liked a lot which is 3-12X, I bought it back when I bought my Airmax Dominator and the gun/scope combo (my go to hunter) is still together.
