FX What the shift?

I deleted my post because it was too hard to explain.

Some of us understood it when it was here. But it’s one of those holes you can immediately go down when you accumulate too much knowledge. Meanwhile you missed something simple and obvious. Your suggestion belongs on page 2 or 3 of this topic if all the simple stuff we are throwing at the wall doesn’t stick.

Hi Guys,

I am pretty new to the whole airgun scene, but I did watch a lot of Youtube videos mainly from Matt Dubber, AEAC and some others to prepare for my new toy, a FX Maverick compact in 22 cal topped with a very cheap 4-12x50 scope, and an FX chrono to help me dial it in.

Anyway, I have zeroed the setup at approximately 25 meters at regs 115/85 and powerwheel 4 at 870 fps ->ES of 1 and std dev of 0.5 over 6 shots (for what it is worth) JSB hades .22 15,89gr.
It really shoots like a laser here, ctc group about 3/16 or 5mm. I was very happy with how it performed. So I pushed my target a bit further, 40m this time, expecting the impact to drop a bit vertically, which it did by about 1" or 2,5cm. The only strange thing, it also shifted right by about 2" or 5 cm (I can still print decent groups there., so it is not spread).

So I went online and looked up everything that could cause this to happen, so I started with making sure the optic is level and that the crosshairs are plumb. I spent a whole day using different methods to verify that it was not the optic placement/ adjustment, I used bubble levels, self leveling lasers, plumb bob on a string, light front to back through optic to align crosshair on the wall with a plumb line, I have done just about everything to make sure that the optic and reticle are level and plumb, but still I get the same results.

It is kind of frustrating that I am not able to get it riding the line.
Might it be the cheap optic that might be out of whack?
I am still saving up to get a decent scope, but this is what I have for now.

I am open for suggestions, if possible, an explanation how to check or how to diagnose would be very helpful!

Thanks!

Hi Vetmx. Yeah, the only suggestion that bugged me was rotating the scope to make the vertical reticle intersect perfectly with the center of the bore when sighting at a mirror. The rest of it was OK. I realized that trying to explain the "pitfalls" of the "mirror" method would take a 60-page essay -- either that or I brush up on using Blender to make a 3D animated video. So I chose to delete my half-assed post and hope that nobody noticed.

Well I did and you pointed out something interesting. But it’s also something disturbing about something that costs so much and people think is upper tier. It could be an issue that owners have to compensate for one way or the other the whole time they own the gun without ever knowing it. Good eye.

Hi Guys,

No worries, I understood all you guy's suggestions and tips.
Luckily, I am able to get the gist of stuff quite fast. I really dive deep in to theoreticals and apply them once I fully understand what and why you do stuff in certain ways.

Anyway,

Good news. I did get rid of this issue!

So, Like I said in the OP, I was using a really el cheapo sight, and to be honest, either the rifle was very crooked, which I did not really expect it to be this bad, or the optic was not in whack, which was the most likely scenario.

So this morning, I got myself a Vortex Venom 5-25x56, and here we are. Rifle shoots as a laser, and all it take me to go from 40m to 25m or viceversa, is 4 clicks on the elevation and it is spot on again. No windage deviation anymore!

God, Im so happy this was the issue.
And lets be honest, this rifle deserves better than a sub $100 optic :ashamed:
