Beeman what velocities from your R8?

I would take Tom Gaylord’s blog with a grain of salt. He may have loaded it up with grease causing the low velocity. Not sure how it took him 30 minutes to get the breech shims in. There is another gent that uses a bic pen cap to align the breech shims prior to inserting the pivot bolt. Looks like a pretty good idea. Also make sure you note the direction the pivot bolt goes in and the side the lock washer goes on. Take pictures with your phone as you go.

I put a Maccari spring in mine (which was pre set). And there is no way I would attempt to install this without a compressor. (Actually I did try and almost burst a capillary). Much more stout than the factory spring. But there may be better techniques I am not aware of to do this without a compressor.

Also get a pair of rubberized work gloves when removing or reinstalling the threaded end cap. You can easily slice your fingers on the sharp edges. I wrapped some blue painters tape around the end cap (after removing the trigger) to also help avoid getting cut.

sorry if im stating the obvious, but make sure you have all the correct tools (pin punches, the correct fitting screw drivers, etc before starting). Also a couple of wood blocks to help support the gun while tapping out the trigger pins. Just go slow, and take breaks if things start getting dicey. These are pretty simple guns, but things need to be done in the correct order.

Wow that's a very nice time capsule. Maybe 400fps in 22?

Incidentally I was high end dealer mechanic for twenty years. Eleven of them a BMW Master Mechanic. In that time I've learned that each manufacturers has their own build philosophy that permeates most everything they make. I haven't taken apart my R8 yet, but I've taken apart dozens of other Weihrauchs. I'm sure the R8 is assembled in the same order as their others. I don't doubt you read what you read but I'll be ok without it. Any R8 won't be tough to work on when done in the right order.

Low power is low spring pressure. That means you probably don't need a spring compressor if you're healthy and careful. Heck, I've assembled several stout R1s without a compressor because I've developed a simple technique that works for me. Well that and I'm a healthy 6'3" 205lbs 😉

I know I probably sound like a pompous jerk citing my experience and contidicting a reputed information source but there's no way to fill you in on my experience without coming across that way. There are several people here that I have helped over the phone for free and done work for that would vouch for my legitimacy. When you're ready to address that rifle I will do the same for you. I will say that you will need a good set of hands and quality hollow ground screwdrivers.

Be well and keep that rifle. It's quite a package. You even got the Beeman trigger shoe.

Ron,
I wonder if we had ever crossed paths in school at Montvale. My Schulungspass is full as well. 15 years between Schwing, Russell, and Passport before I went full time military/govt. Anyway, I have a slew of special tools leftover that may work. I will take a better look at it, but for now it still stacks pellets at 10 yd and can bust eggs at 40 yd with a 2" holdover. It just lacks the speed and power. It is a .177 and I have all the original sights as well.

Just shot my R8 in my basement range. This will shoot clean thru a 1/2” thick pine (shiplap) board. (For some reason i thought they were 1/4” thick). Now I wish I had a chronograph. Way more powerful than my P1.

Not sure why Tom Gaylord is only getting 400 fps with his .177 R8 after tuning it. Something is very wrong with his.

Hitting a bottle cap is no issue using aperture sights, and the pellet goes clean thru.

So I am thinking (using a Maccari spring/piston seal) at least 720 with CPHP’s?

I just got a 177 R8 and I'm trying to find out what the normal (actual) velocity people get from them.

Thanks
Ron
My two used up club R8's now average 680 and 685 with JSB 7.33's. Both were shooting in the 400's when I got them but a good cleaning and new, loose fitting piston seals and new breach seals got them up. I may have bought ARH springs too, I can't recall. Both like 7.33's and 10.34's but don't particularly care for any size H&N FTT's. I gave $600 for the pair with diopter sights which were half the reason I bought them. The blue was worn almost off in places and the guns were full of patina (call it what it is, LIGHT RUST). It was the beginning of COVID and a starving gun smith bead blasted the patina off, hot blued them and cerakoted the trigger guards for $50 per gun. Not super fond of the matte looking finish now though.
