What yardage do you shoot when you get a new rifle

How far should you sight in your scope, 25, 30 35 40 yards??? Lots of my shooting is at 25 yards and I wanted to use that but since I am new air gunner with a new Toy and new scope I want to get it right with this rifle. I am able to shoot out to 75 yards on my range, Thanks for listening....Pete (AB)

p.s I hope this question was not answered 50 times over. I did a search but I want to listen to real air gunners, and not have to go to Youtube and listen to some gumball

The Regal is home baby. Keep the fingers crossed to some good shooting, maybe have a camera on the way, then I will be looking for a Eagle Vision and I will start posting some hunting videos

50 yards is what I primarily shoot at so, that's what I zero at. My first zero is usually around 18.
If you are going to shoot primarily at 25 yards, I'd recommend setting the first zero there and then find out where the second ends up. I'd guess 55ish. Hawke Optics has the Chairgun program that can help you figure out quite a lot about the trajectory of your rifle.
Congrats on the new rifle too!

I have my rifles zeroed at 50 yards but I have also recorded settings for both 75 and 100 yards. You can certainly use a program to calculate this but I just wrote it down one day and tend to shoot hold over or under from thoughs three positions. I believe there are some posts here in the target section where some have settings recorded every 5 yards. Others may have more advanced suggestions but this works for me for now.

If you shot mostly at 25 yards i would say zero the near there and your far should fall between 38 and 42 two yards. You will have enough of mil-dots to shoot out to 75 yards. My .25 Cal (Tactic) is zeroed at 19 yards and 50 yards JSB kings 900 FPS. My Cricket (zeroed at 25 yards and 38 yards JSB 18 at 876 FPS, my s510 is zeroed at 21yards and 39 JSB 16 grains 825 FPS)

There are a lot more variables for sighting in than just saying I sight a particular rifle at X distance. First, there is the game(s) you wish to play. If hunting or shooting pests, there is the size of the critters involved. Second, is the sight height for that can change things significantly. Third, is the pellet and velocities,

Once these things have been determined, then you can use Chairgun or other ballistics program to determine which range and hold meets the most requirements.

For instance, if I am sighing in a 10 meter rifle, then sighting in at 10 meters makes the most sense, unless I am shooting a 7 yard bell target. For field target, with my set-up, I have found that 30 meters gives me the most room for error at most ranges. For other specific games like sporting rifle at 50 yards, or benchrest, then these are well defined distances and are sighted in accordingly.

Hunting or pest control is really dependent on the size of the critter, and the ranges that are most likely to be encountered.

Without knowing the sight height over the bore, the kind of rifle and the pellets and velocities, and the size and range of the targets, any particular answer is really just a guess or someone's particular set-up for their own use.

I understand what you are telling me. When I just got into air gunning it kind of freaked me out that if I sighted the rifle at 10 ft. it would shoot high at 30 yards

Then I started to read about flights of the pellet and it all came to me

The gun is shooting great at 30 yards and that is what I sighted the rifle in at.. What would be my other mark if sighted in for 30 yards?? (my far) I am shooting JSB 15.8 gr.

Can I shoot at 25 yards and get away with it?

My Guess (plus a quick check of Chairgun Pro) a 30 yard zero will just give you a single zero point. If no scope is installed on your gun, and you where to put it on a level and shot there would be a point at where the pellet would peek its climb and then start to return back down. By the number i have on my gun that shoots jsb15's and some guessing because we do not know your FPS at the muzzle i would say your gun will have a single zero at 30 yards. You could easily check it by shooting card board always aiming at the same point at 20,30,and 40 yards and check out the impact point.

I only shot around 5 pellets at a resetting metal target crow and I was able to hit the spot at 45 yards ....4 pellets 3 hits I have no mil dot on my scope. its the 4-12 VX-2. Fine reticle. I prefer that, I do not like cross hairs covering my target. I also took out a few garden pest all humanly. Right below the eye shots, The gun is deadly, and shooting great. I am very pleased
