Whats maximum run time on hatsan lighting?

I’ve been filling a 45 minute SCBA (66 cu. ft.) with my Lightning, but I’m only filling from 3000 psi to 4500 psi. The compressor does this under 15 minutes. I am awaiting the delivery of a 60 minute SCBA (88 cu. ft.) which will be totally empty. I am interested in the replies, I intend to fill it in stages, because I think (though I don’t have the facts) that going from 0 psi to 4500 psi would be a long push.

I had a Lightning compressor that always overheated. It filled my 45min SCBA in either 3 or 4 tries from empty (SCBA was new to me and arrived empty). Compressor would take at least 2 tries when it was used to top off from 3000 to 4500.

That said, the Lightning compressor is designed to fill tanks in one go whether from empty or topping off. Compressor that works properly should reach a near "stable" temperature and finish filling what its connected to. Temperature will climb, but by a decreasing amount as filling continues until the compressor reaches a temperature that stays almost constant.

If you want to do it in stages, just be sure you do not start the compressor under load. Let the compressor build pressure to match the pressure in the SCBA before you open SCBA tank valve.

I wouldn't recommend filling from zero to 4500 unless you have a Pressure Maintaining Valve (PMV) on your system after your last filter.

Firstly, if you fill from zero, you will quickly expend the media in whatever filters you have in use as you go through the first thousand psi.

Secondly, running your compressor for that amount of time, although the manufacturer says its OK, will "wear" your first and second stage rings very quickly.

The smart thing to do when you get a new SCBA tank is to take it to a dive shot to get it filled. If the tank is expired, and you can't do that, top off the largest tank that you currently own, and then hook it up to your new tank and equalize pressures. You should be around 2000 psi give or take. Then fill both with your compressor, and you get around the "not having a PMV" situation...

Just my two cents based on previous experience with the two cylinder Tuxing which is basically the same compressor as the Hatsan and AV.

Although I wouldn’t hesitate to give my Lightning a workout to fill from zero to 4500, Centercuts advice makes perfect sense to me, to just plain aid in longetivity of the compressor. Somewhere in the instructions it says not to exceed temps of I believe 180 or 185 degrees, so use that as the gage. If your temps are rising, stopping is the common sense to do. With the warmer weather just around the corner, I would blow a fan against that compressor while it was filling, too.

35 minutes from me is JF paintball, and they charge $9 for a fill. If I had an empty tank I’d rather spend the $9 and only use my Lightning for the 3000-4500 top offs. Thanks for the input, CC.
