What's your .22 R9 / HW95 favorite pellet(s)?

I got mine from AoA last summer, @25y quarter size is the best that it can get. Most of the time is between 1.0 to 1.5"

I have put over 1000 pellets through it. Pellets, I have been shooting is H&N FTT 5.54/5.55 and Crossman HP and dome.

I even swap out scope SWFA 10x42 and check/loctite all my stock screws.

Comparing to my R9 .177, I can get dime/nickle size all day.

You might try checking your velocity consistancy over a chrono. If your rifle is not shooting consistantly, it wont make any difference what pellet you choose. Check the breech seal for leaks, check the muzzle crown and check for burrs on the breech lead in. Any of these things can cause poor grouping. If there is an issue, you arent helping your rifle to just keep shooting it. A small problem can get bigger.

Sounds about normal for every Weihrauch I've had in .22

Instead of wasting a whole bunch of pellets and money, just push one through the barrel with a rod and see how it feels.

That will tell the tale and only take a few minutes.

Use the big H&Ns. See if you get decent resistance through the length of the barrel, with a gentle choke. And watch the pellet very closely as it slowly exits the muzzle. Check that it looks square and centered just before it pops out, and make sure there isn't a little snag right before the head clears the crown. Take a look at the pellet, and check that the rifling engaged it cleanly, and it's not so deep that there was lead scrubbed between the grooves left in the pellet head.

My prediction:

There will be snugness until the pellet clears the breech, then it will basically free fall till it hits the choke, and the choke will be extremely tight to the point it scrubs lead from the head of the pellet. If that's the case, toss it. It will never shoot well.

If all that checks out, clean the hell out of the barrel and especially the choke. If it's leaded up a brass brush will clear it in a couple passes.

Then chronograph it for consistency.

Hope you get it straightened out. Let us know how it goes.

Although .177, these seemed to work best for me.

(bench-rest @25Y)

Those were good enough for what I do. I didn't try many others for better groups before trading the R9 for something I enjoy.

H&N FTT 5.54 head size or Air Arms Falcons which the tin claims are actually 5.52 head size but fit just like the H&N 5.54's do although when I got and tested the ones I have, they were only $16.99 a tin vs the crazy $25.99 they've jumped to.

The AA's are just rebranded JSB Jumbo RS but for whatever odd reason, the JSB pellets were less accurate. Considering the big price jump in AA's, I may have to revisit the JSB's and have another go.

Hmmm, I got the R9 last year. I've put over a half dozen different weight/type/brand pellets thru it. All 3 size H&N FTT // H&N Terminators // H&N Spitzkugel // JSB RS/Hades/Diabolo 18.13gr & 15.89gr// Crosman Piranha & Crosman Hollow Point ( have'nt come across any regular Crosman Domes at Big Box outlets, that's odd yes?) // Gamo Red Fire?/ Gamo Rockets & Gamo Magnum,// Falcon 13.43 domed. U can bet I missed listing 1 or 2. About half of them shoot about what you are getting. The Gamo Rockets surprised me with how well they did. The Gamo Red ? thingies sucked. I just ordered and received 16 ( 22cal bore mops ). I'm gonna try polishing the barrel on the R9 ( and my other break-barrels ) and see if that helps. I recently watched a vid on AirGun101 on the the topic of polishing an airgun barrel. Looks pretty easy and I already have the polishing compounds from when I use to shoot BlackPowder & Centerfire rifles.

I used to be all about accuracy decades ago when shooting in leagues. Now it’s all outdoor fun and the optimal accuracy days are long gone. In the old days we would find the best pellet for the particular rifle we had, then make that pellet even better for the gun. We would weigh the pellets and then size them. Through a lot of experimentation we would find and build the optimal pellet for our gun. I don’t hear anyone talking about this anymore. It’s really challenging and rewarding. Sometimes one will find that some of the cheapest pellets can be transformed into the most accurate ones. I’m sure they still make the sizing tools with interchangeable dies. Does anyone still do this?

Did anyone of those pellets you mentioned got you nickle or dime size at 25y or even better one ragged hole. Also, please update us after you polishing/mop your barrel.

Thanks!

I assume you have an .22 HW95. AOA sells the HW and Pyramid sells the R9. Rumors abound that they are the same rifle, however over the years I have found that they are not and do perform very different.

In my HW95 it likes the 11.75 Predator GTO the best. I have defeated more than one aspiring PCP shooter at 50 yards with that HW95. Grin!!! I have naturally tried every pellet known to man just out of curiosity and the GTO is the best and overall HW rifles like it.

The R9 may or may not like the GTO the barrels are not the same regardless of rumor. My R9 likes the JSB 15.89 the best and shoots also the Hades well up to 35 yards. However shooting paintballs at 60 yards the 15.89 is required.

To go along with this a light trigger, good breathing control and learning to simply relax and let the rifle do its thing is 90 percent of it. It took me a couple of years and great determination to learn to shoot a springer well. Now it is my preferred option and I have sold all PCP rifles. No more wondering when that next 3000 dollar compressor is going to die.

Try the Predator GTO , I think you will like it. The GTO is in a class of its own, it does not fit the mold of light no lead pellet results. You will get on average 812 fps and around 16 fpe also retained downrange simply due to velocity.

Cheers

I just did a pellet/barrel resistance test, and my barrel did exactly as Thumper said by pushing a pellet through the barrel with a rod. I noticed there's snugness until the pellet clears the breech, then it basically free fall (hardly any resistance) till it hits the choke, and the choke is extremely tight to the point it scrubs lead from the side head of the pellet.

I am sol except try to get a new barrel at this point.

UPDATE: 2/18/2022 So I got another .22 barrel, the pellet test were the same as above, snugged, loose then tight. BUT!!!!! it's shoot nickle size grouping at 25y within the fist 20 pellets through the barrel using Crossman HP.
