What's your thoughts on the new FX DRS Tactical? Prices and lots of pictures here

Ok, I watched Matt Dubber’s video on the rifle and I’m thinking about it differently than even his use case…

I’m a pellet only shooter and I’m thinking of it as a “Next Gen” Dreamline… as it’s a similar price point and geared to pellet shooting.

Advantages:

A constant criticism of FX on these forums is the rigidity of their liner barrel system. The DRST addresses this with its air tube around the barrel system. So that reduces/eliminates a major criticism of legacy (Dreamline, Crown and Impact) FX platforms.

Another potential advantage is that the shot counts published for the DRST in .177 and .22 look very promising.

All FX rifles use essentially the same liners, and this liner system has proven to be extremely accurate with pellets at typical pellet gun distances.

So, I’m thinking of this DRST as perhaps being:
FX’s new entry-level platform (new Dreamline) with the potential to be an extremely high performance pellet platform…

…a rifle that sells at the $1,000 price point with an air tube capacity that would allow a newbie to hand pump and still get over 100 shots per fill. The younger newbies might even think that it looks cool.

The major disadvantage that I saw (Dubber’s video) was it requires some disassembly to make velocity adjustments on the DRST.

If it shoots pellets great out to 50 yards, maybe I’ll replace my .177 Dreamline Classic - which is incredibly accurate at 30 & 40 yards.

We should be able to get airguns we like the appearance of even if it copies a controversial pb. I worry that it could be mistaken for the pb in a stressful situation leading to a tragedy, however. Currently there is no regulation of airguns in the US at the national level. Only local regulations in some areas. I do not own any "black rifles" and the styling doesn't appeal to me. But if you like it by all means get one but I would encourage you to be aware it could be mistaken for the more regulated pb and take reasonable steps to avoid a problem.

It is far from the only airgun that resembles a pb. Most are pistols. There have been issues.

Fx has created a platform that mimics one of if not the most popular PB platform in the US. The AR. I know a lot of shooters of all kinds of weapons from hunting to competition and most own at least one or more AR rifles. They are popular truck guns out west and there are competitions at gun clubs all over the US for semi-auto rifles popular with the younger generations. I see these shooters / collectors possibly getting a DRST to be able to shoot their preferred platform a whole lot cheaper and in areas where a real AR would be unsafe or elligle. No it is not semi-auto but it has the same feel and look and will accept the same Lego accessories that their real AR’s are sporting. I shoot at a couple of active shooting clubs that have events for semi-auto rifles and pistols. I hear this fast shooting going on and can’t help but think I’m glad I don’t live close to these ranges and boy how much do those guys spend in ammo to do this every weekend? These same events could be done with a side action Airgun just as competitive and fun. Plus side no one within a hundred yards would know it was going on and it would be completely safe in a rural area Or indoors. I see this as a win for shooters everywhere.

I’m a big FX fan. Haven’t owned one I didn’t love. I have 2 Impacts, a DRS, Panthera, Dreamline and a Streamline. Any trouble I’ve ever had was self induced and quite frankly those were few and far between. I’ve tuned every one of them multiple times with different calibers and weights. They are meticulous, and it takes someone of that nature to truly enjoy them without pulling your hair out.

As for this rifle. Love it! I’m a big fan AR style rifles and have a few, so the platform is familiar, and honestly, the only traditional rifle stock in my stable is the Streamline in an R-10 menilli stock. So this just saves me from having to buy a chassis to go with it so I’m down for it. As for caliber? Hmm. I’m probably going to go with a .25 in a 500mm. I don’t have one of those, but I think it would do well with 26gr slugs. If it doesn’t, well I don’t have a pellet shooter. So it might take up that slack as an under 100yd stalker. Which currently I have a 500mm Impact for in .22. She’s a chunk to carry in the trees, so this might be the alternate.

Recall the Crosman MAR177 AR15? Or better one from the original designer.

Modern FX not my thing but if someone want to donate one to the household make it a LONG one please.

If I wanted a “tactical” gun id just buy one not air powered
Me too, but things like that here are way more the price in shops in the US as we are talking black market, and the ammo is probably 3-4-5 if not 10 X the cost
And that is forgetting the cost to personal freedom and wallet if you get caught out with such things.

The MP5 i had many decades ago was 4100 USD, and i got damn cheap and sold on at 5500 USD, filling a MAG with the 9 mm rounds was not cheap, or easy even if back then 9 x19 was fairly easy to find, 38 - 44 - 45 was OMG hell to find.
So if you had a Chicago typewriter, well good luck finding any 45ACP to make it go.

Glad i left that racket a long long time ago.

Big favorite back in those days what the H&K G3 that armed forces and national guard had back then, pretty easy to find also the 7.62 ammo was plentiful.

What would you prefer to shoot?
Slugs or pellets?
I shoot pellets for probably 75% of my trigger time. I love shooting .177 in sub 12 fpe and in ten meter rifles. The slugs come out though when I go hunting/pesting. My favorite slug gun currently is an FX Panthera .22 with a double air tank set up. I also shoot slugs in an FX Crown MK2 .22 that is set up to shoot silhouette with a group of rimfire shooters. They allowed me to ”play” with them using my air rifle and it works well.

Probably the 500mm in .22 .... if I did, but its not really my style. I have an FX Dynamic with a 600mm barrel, but that is really best for bench/prone. It is so long it is difficult to maneuver with it. This particular form factor is meant to be maneuverable, and anything longer than 500mm would be difficult to move around with, and it would not have the FPS capabilities of the longer barrel. I would probably opt for a wildcat III over this model.

I’m going f be shooting slugs. My DRS is setup with 34 gr patriots in .22. My 500mm is tossing 22gr impulse slugs, so I’d be shooting 26gr if I bought in .22, and since Matt Dubber is shooting them, I’d say that would be my choice. After some research, I would probably go with .22 instead of .25. But I’d be good with either one. What I can say is it will absolutely be 500mm. I’m going to change the trigger shoe, and butt stock to an adjustable folder. Maybe grip to an ergo zero grip and that’s it. Optics are either an Immersive 10x or a HYPER 7. I have both, and I like both on my 500mm Impact. Going to be a medium range stalking rifle I can pack up with my long range DRS on horseback.

Showing your age John, lol. I had the crosman MAR17 and the Daisy dual power with removable magazine that held 2 - 7 gram CO2.
