If it was an independent, franchise store, she was correct, they are not allowed to accept air rifles. It is specifically prohibited in their franchise rules, it must go to a company location.I went into a ups store with a gun I had sold and was asked what it was. I told the girl it was an air rifle and she told me that they couldn’t ship a gun, that I had to go through an FFL. I tried to explain to her that it wasn’t a firearm but in her mind it made no difference. Appealing to others that worked there made no difference either. I don’t live in a liberal part of the country (thank God) so it really surprised me. I drove across town to another location and when asked what it was, I told them it was golf clubs, no problem.
As for the description, if you're not buying insurance, call it what you want. If you want any chance of a successful claim, be truthful, and have documentation of cost, pictures of air rifle and it's packing. And be aware, the protection you buy from the carrier is not insurance, but a guarantee of delivery. If they lose it, or, if you can prove damage due to their negligence (difficult) and you have good documentation, you might get a "depreciated value" recovery. If you want real multi-peril insurance coverage, buy from a third party.
