Where is that air coming from?

Calling all p-rod owners… is it normal to feel a slight blast of air near/at the rear of the gun after trigger is pulled? I mean very very slight, but not normally felt w other pcp’s.

Gun is currently unmodified/out of box, except for custom stock (as pic). Everything appears normal during shot; target is hit at point of aim. Getting near consistent avg speed of 720fps @ 11.75gr (.22). Except I can feel a brush of air on my face… really odd. Anyone experienced the same.. is it normal?

to be honest I don't have a p- rod but I'm suspecting you have a bad o ring in the breach.. so it's where the probe/bolt goes into the barrel, if you single load it, you can lay a tissue over the breach and if it is that o ring it will show..
not sure since I don't have one but if it is not that, could be a transfer port seal .
but I suspect it is the breach o ring.. over time they get worn or damaged with pellets going through them.
hopefully someone else who has one will reply.

Air to the face is indicative of breach oring missing, is it louder than normal too?

Thanks all. Will check that breech o-ring; sounds logical. As for is it louder than normal? Hehe, honestly l am not sure what normal is for her as I literally unboxed her from new-in-box a week ago (bought back in ‘21, then life took over). Though is a bit louder than my 1701/ 1720, if there’s something to compare to. Welp will follow up later this week, see what we find.

Keep us in the loop!

I had one of mine apart the other day and will there replaced the transfer port seal. It was looking squashed. That definitely made a difference in the puff of air that I feel in the face.

I think that was my 1720. My stock Prod is definitely louder than the 1720. That is a little more snap from the muzzle.

Like others said try the barrel oring first. Super simple to replace, it might of stretched a little over the years. Might as well check those 4 screws holding your breech/receiver down too. Barrel oring is a common #009. If you have a local hardware store they probably have it. I think I found every oring for a P-rod at my Rural King.

Good luck, you’ll figure it out. It’s an easy gun to work on. You already got that fancy stock. Might as well go down the rabbit hole of mods next haha. I’ve been tinkering with one of my Prod for weeks. 😂🤘

Thanks for the insight with the oring sizing. Def helps. Agreed, I like these p-rod/ 1720/ 1701’s because they are straightforward to work with. I do have a couple of mods/upgrades planned (huma reg, hill-air items, etc…nothing crazy :) The addiction is real I suppose. Haha.

Haha they are fun.I just added a huma reg to mine. Did some valve mods and opened the ports, etc. Running a hill lightweight hammer and peak striker. Very happy with the performance so far. Of course as happy as I was I just tore it apart again this morning again 😂. Just had to add a delrin poppet too lol. I have this nice wood stock to put it in whenever I’m done farting around.

Have fun

That’s a sweet looking stock/shroud. Looks like we both share the exact same addiction. Lol. Will get to work this weekend, fixing/ installing/ replacing the exact things you’ve listed there. Small world.

By the way where’d get/order that delrin poppet from, please? Makes sense to put a new one in while am at it. Thanks in advance.

The shroud is just a wrap but it turned out nice. I was getting pretty good numbers on mine with just lightweight hammer/new hs and bigger ports. Did B Staley before that. Play good for my needs but the obsession kicked in haha.
The huma was a game changer though. When unregulated I had a ES of like 25fps for about to mags(17.5-18fpe). With the reg I can get a es of 5-6fps and should get 3 mags at 18-19fpe once tuned.

Mountain Air sells Delrin Poppets. Probably members on here that can make you one too. I’m just learning my lathe or I’d make you one. Delrin will definitely last longer.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Would you mind sharing where you got the stock? Good looking rig.

The stock came from Airguns Revisions. It’s really nice. I just looked and I didn’t see any on the site. Maybe email Rich and see if he has any or will have some available soon. They all look great but sometimes he gets some with extra nice wood.

Now you guys made me think I need to check mine for that puff of air. Have only shot it a few magazines full since I bought it used. That was about three years ago. I bought an M-rod and a P-rod used, from the same guy and he gave me the info on the tune for both. I need to learn more about tuning with the various mods and parts out there. A carbine stock should be in my future for the p-rod. It wears the factory buttstock now. Be Well Brothers, Bandito.

I've had the same issue with my Prod. I get a blast of air from the hammer adjustment hole (like those glaucoma eye tests) I've replaced the breach seal, taken the gun apart but still cannot correct it. So annoying.
You’re right on the money. That’s exactly the experience… glaucoma puff of air. AND yes, just confirmed its coming out of the hammer spring guide/end cap. (#34/35 in diagram) I put a piece of masking tape over that end cap/hole, and puff of air no more.

I felt that same puff of air (though faint) last night when took the screw-on stock off my Crosman 1720. Thought to test this that on my p-rod today. You beat me to it :)

Now… does this mean there is a seal issue with the valve assembly (leaking from the pin/area which the hammer strikes)? (#21). I can’t imagine air leaking out anywhere else. Maybe the transfer port/ gasket area(?).

The best I could come up with is it could be something to do with the transfer port seal. If I remember correctly this only started to happen after I took the gun apart for another issue.
Good to know. Thanks. I have new seals (and a hill .105 TP) coming… hopefully that’s it, because the hills valve assembly is $200, ouch.
