Lotta good stuff posted. My father was a real cowboy for a few years in the early thirties and an Army Captain in WW2. He stressed instinct offhand shooting in my youth and was the best I've ever seen at it. I wasn't allowed to use a sling in order to improve my neuromuscular skills. Plus slings are slow, well kinda. I've learned to deploy a slung and folded Leshiy 2, get my elbow Rhodesian and on target very quickly. Age, neck and shoulder issues have me limited to rearward bias rifles. A SLING locks it in and allows me to carry the rifle without depleting my limited neurological resources. Lots of tools and gizmos which I use have been mentioned and fortunately there are time tested workarounds, age calibrated eyeball rangefinder, cardboard chronograph, etc. Nothing beats a SLING as indispensable unless you're chained to a bench.
