Which gun/caliber should I go with for extreme benchrest/ extreme field target?

Based on your experiences with the RAW's what do you find is the optimum FPS with the .22cal.shooting the 25.3 gr. JSB's that gives you the best accuracy.{ average group at 50 yds, } Right now I am in the 920 to 940 fps range and my groups are somewhat erratic at 50 yds. Might shoot 2-3 shots in almost one hole then drop one low or high for no known reason. Seems from reading this thread, I should increase my speed. Also, what about the re-designed as compared to the regular 25.3's and FX vs. JSB

Having slept on your question I should also ask if you shooting over wind flags at that distance? If not then you should consider it. A 1MPH breeze will move the POI off your POA at 50 yards and as the wind increases the pellet will continue to move further and further away from its intended target. It may not be the cleanliness of your bore at all, though both my unchoked poly barrels are more finicky about cleanliness than other barrels.

When I purchased a Red Wolf from AOA it came with an AOA pamphlet that said something to the effect that when shooting pellets above 900 FPS they suggest using lubed pellets. They suggested a few different lubes but I don't remember them by name but their suggestion of using lubed pellets always stuck in my mind. Some shooters don't bother and shoot lead straight from the tin while some shooters go to great lengths to wash and lube their ammo so YMMV.

Wanted to jump in here too.

My RAW HM1000x .22 is shooting very accurately at 940-945 FPS with either the JSB 25.39 MRDs or the FX Branded 25.39. In light wind conditions you should be getting 1/2” groups at 50 yards. My Poly barrel gets cleaned after approximately 75-100 rounds and I always get 2 or 3 patches with visible lead sediments.

The combination of shooting higher velocity pellets with the Poly barrels seems to need cleaning with Patchworm more frequently than my other lower velocity non Poly barrels.

Try this: Clean barrel thoroughly and turn your HST up a bit and Chrony your shot string at 940. Shoot 7-10 five shot groups and get your average. Try and pick a light wind day. You should be very close to 1/2” hopefully.

FWIW, I’ve been testing this product with excellent results.

I too would pull lead out of my barrel as Tom noted above but after using this in my bore and also on the pellets I have yet to see any more lead on patches. I have no affiliation with this company. I’ve also had similar success on my ARA .22LR rifles.
