Why can't I renew a listing?

I'm seeing ads more recent than mine that are renewed, but I'm not able to renew mine? I click on the button and nothing happens.

That is correct, it has to run the full listing time and then you will receive a "notice" to renew.

That's what I thought. So how do some of these ads manage to renew every couple of days? Or are they (cheating) deleting their ads and then posting new ones?
