Always been curious about this - even with the high prices of let's just say 115g 9mm @ $0.25/round, 100-200g slugs are $0.50/rd or more. I don't get it when it's just lead, no primer, no powder, no case.
Why do slugs cost more than real ammunition?

Production volume. TBH though, not sure where you are getting 9mm parabellum for $25.00 per hundred?

you can find steel case and remanufactured <$0.25 - I picked up some Blazer and CCI at around $0.25 couple weeks ago.

I haven't figured it out but if you buy lead and a mould it would pay for itself pretty fast

It would 100% pay for itself pretty damn fast, just like reloading, but after all these years I haven't even started reloading yet, so I doubt I'd start casting.

Total $203 / $0.50 each) = 406 slugs payback period. Then free ammo forever!

I have most all of it but sizing die my 357 sam yang shoots them well the way they drop also have a couple pellet moulds I haven't tried yet

If guys are willing to pay $2-3,000 for a pellet gun toy, then another $1-4,000+ in support fluff, why not hammer them for their ammo. It makes absolute sense.

So, you're saying that you pay $100 for 200 slugs? Where are you buying from and what caliber? That's a lotta cash.
Per NSA site, only the big bad 50 cals are .50¢ each. .357 is .25‼ each. Throwing out a general statement that slugs are expensive might mean that ALL slugs are costly. Not so.

Because we pay that much. If people would quit paying that amount the price would drop or they would disappear from the market because they are not commercially viable.
I reloaded for years. But when you could get 9mm by the 1000 round case for $189.00 it quit making sense to reload handgun ammo.
You take all the material cost, cost of equipment and then you have to figure out what your time is worth. Being self employed I can make more money in an hour working than I can save reloading any round I shoot.

Lead plumbing is very rare, doubt you'll find any. Old style brick chimney flashing is pure lead. I would ask some local roofing contractors if you could buy their scrap. They will otherwise take it to the scrap yard and sell it. Offer them $1 a pound and they'll probably sell it to you. I once got over a hundred pounds of the stuff for $20 from a roofer in NH. Roofing lead is often covered with hardened tar though and you'll have to clean it off thoroughly or you'll "poison" your lead pot with gunk that won't burn off.
