Wife says this one is off limits

This white tree rat (not an Albino) has taken up residence in the yard.

Wife adamant it has a “get out of jail” card and I am obliging thus far.

However, it doesn’t seem to be able to keep friends very long…

Leucism. That's the term I couldn't remember, so I used the white/albino ploy... trying not to show my ignorance. (sheepish grin)

Never have seen a white tree rat here in North Alabama, but I understand it isn't all that rare the farther north you go...???

Oh well, I guess it has been a good thing that I have had health problems for the last several months. It gives the tree rats time to make more targets... err, umm, more tree rats and get comfortable... so I have more targets. I only shoot paper to check zero and groupings for accuracy/precision.

Wow... just looked at the clock... up all night, but I feel pretty good! I am going to have to try and stay up long enough to look for a pesting shot at daylight! Or maybe an hour or so after... (smile)

All my best!

If I saw that in my yard I would 100% clap it just like all the rest..... but I might think of taking it to the taxidermist because it's super unique.

There is a town in IL that has the country's largest population of white squirrels, search Olney IL. I think they are protected there.
I have seen 3 together in a neighborhood about 3 miles from my place.

I guess one from that brood decided to pack up and expand its horizons.

Oddballs in coloration do get shuned. Mother Nature is cruel and brilliant all in one. Manny know it’s a burden and a bad gene to breed with . They are constantly trying to survive and the red or grey don’t want to be around such a vulnerable target. Remember 90% of their predators are airborne and that’s a whit flag target

I have shot every variation of the spectrum . Yet the great white squirrel has never been spotted by me

Nice. I think a white squirrel's days are numbered, so easy for predators to see. So if you don't harvest it, a predator will, IMHO, of course. But I see how having one around where you can watch & study it would be cool. I killed one a couple of years ago & I hunted him for two days & noticed that the other squirrels did not want him around. They would chase him off. Have you noticed how the other squirrels react to it?
