Tuning Wildcat .25 MK3 de-tune

I was listening to what a few members were saying about tightening groups with less wear on the rifle by using a lower reg setting. I keep telling myself I didn’t buy a high-end rifle to shoot little green army men in my basement. I got over that with my Daisy when I was a kid. But after reaching the FX stated 70 fpe on the Wildcat MK3, I decided I didn’t need or want that much power. While bench shooting the rifle, it’s fun to stack pellet on top of pellet at 50 yards and more. But while actually hunting, even with a shooting stick or a tree rest, the rifle isn’t braced as well as on the bench. Group size get bigger and I believe a lot of it is do to recoil. So I have dropped the reg pressure from 160 down to 135/140. I was getting 25 shots before falling off the reg. With the new tune, I only lost 50 FPS but gained another 10 shots. And the rifle really is more controllale.

Lower power guns are a lot easier to shoot accurately providing you Got the right pellet to barrel combo for the lower speeds. Plus you don't need the pellet or slug to go on and straight through the critters. I prefer the lead to stay inside them which seems to just drop them instantly.

I agree. Other then my bigbores, I like the pellet to use it’s energy at the target. Not 50 yards beyond. The bigbores I use on deer are better with a pass through for a drain-hole. IMO. After years of shooting my Beeman R-10 in FT with the recoil (not that it was bad), I kind of got lazy with with the PCPs.

Did you get 70 fps out of the Wildcat without any modification ? ( power plenum for example)

No. The rifle was sent back to FX. Not sure what all they did to it. The PP was added. But I don’t see any other modifications that were done. I did receive their shot string showing 70 fpe with 33.95 pellets. I could never break 68 fpe at 945 FPS with the 33.95. After going to a 44 gn pellet, I reached 72 fpe at about 860 FPS.

I Have my .25 Wildcat MkIII Sniper tuned way down to105 bar and getting a great shot string shooting Jsb 25.39gr though.
