Wildcat mk3 bt compact 30cal question

A "good slug gun" is relative and very subjective. It wont shoot slugs as well as a longer 700mm setup would. The reason is: to get the higher fps/fpe you need to crank up the tune; which uses a lot more air and runs the risk of upsetting the slug as it leaves the barrel if not done correctly. Compacts are best for shorter ranges and lighter slugs or pellets. Again its relative. I feel confident I can hit a ground squirrel at about 100yds with my little 22 Cal Wildcat. Thats pretty far for a lower power setup, but not nearly as far as my 700mm 25 Cal setup. You can tune your compact Wildcat to shoot lighter Nielsens just fine, but you wont see the same velocities as a 700mm. So I think it depends on what you want your rig to do. I think my Wildcat is a great slug gun, so far as I stick to the light slugs and shorter ranges.

As far as accuracy goes, the goal is to have enough velocity combined with twist rate to stabalize. Past that you want a good tune that isnt blowing the slug around after it leaves the muzzle. The actual speed has no bearing on accuracy, but it will affect trajectory and wind deflection.

And with everything shown 860 fps seems to be the winner :) I would be far more worried about more wind deflection than drop. 960 FPS the wind deflection gets worse as you increase range when comparing to the 860 fps.

Other than some screen shots from @CTairgunner1288, I haven’t seen any proof from anyone else yet proving their claims. A lot of keyboard warriors out there thinking they’re helping the OP with screwing up what seems to be a nice tune.

To the OP, you haven’t been back to respond on ANY advice given to you to this point, or give any of us direction into what you expect from your FX. I think some extra info would calm the tension that you’ve started in this post!

I think a few of you just need to hug it out.

Just did some experimenting with mine and swapped it over to 30 Cal. Keep in mind, my Wildcat is a MK3 tube version with a 910 plenum, 13g hammer weight, and 52mm hammer spring. Single reg set at 125Bar and the hammer setting max I get ~830fps with Nielsen 43.8grain. I could likely get another ~30-50fps? cranking up the reg but would get a lot less shot count.

OP what are your reg settings?

Quite a fiery thread but here’s a different perspective from a Wildcat BT owner who has played around with a compact 30 config. My notes show that I was able to tune the gun to shoot Zan 45g slugs at 945fps on the knee of a 155bar tune with a heavy hammer. However, this yielded a very noisy beast with a rather lively shot cycle that was not conducive to accurate shooting. That’s my point here - I think we all go through a phase of chasing “Mo Powah” but learn through experience that a setup that requires the least power for a given objective is the real winner. Thus, if the OP is finding that the accurate 850fps slugs meet his needs, he should thank his lucky stars and enjoy using what must be a relatively sedate gun!

You took the words right out of my mouth. I just went through a two week period of trying to get my Maverick compact 25 to shoot slugs. Multiple people smarter than I advised against it telling me I would not be enthused with the results.
I just had to see if I could make a slug shooter out of it. I ended up shooting slugs with decent accuracy but the max velocity I could attain with NSA 26.8 gr slugs was in the 920’s. Any faster and it became noisy and accuracy fell off noticeably. As weevil stated the shot cycle was not pleasant which indicated to me the gun was being pushed too hard.
I ended up going back to my tune for FX 25.4 pellets @ 885 fps.
Are the 960-970 fps speeds attainable in the 500mm barrel with that slug weight? I don’t know so thought I would ask.

I’d guess that you could get to 980 at the peak of a 160bar tune with a big hammer strike, but again, not very pleasant to shoot.

Totally agree with your findings : all air guns have a sweet range that you can feel and hear when you’re tuning. I always star tuning a new gun by feel - old skool methods. Starting out with a chrony and a big fpe target from a South African YouTuber leads many folks astray.
