N/A Winter fun with iron sights

I try to shoot 10 meter offhand in my basement during the winter. After practicing I like to relax a bit and shoot off bags to check my zero or do some pellet testing. Turns out both my match rifles prefer JSBs over my new lot of RWS. Too bad because the last lot of RWS shot great, and now I have 5000 from the new lot to use up. Which is not that big a problem since I am not that great a shot anyway. If I keep all shots a 7 or higher, I am having a good night. Shown are groups from my FWB 300S and FWB 800, along with a group from my FWB Sport just for fun. I always seem to get some vertical spread using a post front sight as I have a hard time lining up the top of the post with the bottom of the bull. Share your iron sight groups if you have some handy!

View attachment 528649Off the bags front and rear. The original diopter sights. For 10 meter bullseye I actually think I do better with them than a scope. With the diopter you are using the entire bullseye with a scope you are shooting at a hole which lets the group open up a little for me
Nice!

This thread looks like my time to shine. I shoot 20m. Usually standing without support. Sometimes I’ll sit and use a front rest if I need to zero or feel out a tin of pellets.

Rifle is a .22 HW77, Vortek HO kit, shooting JSB Heavies. It’s consistently 2-2.5 moa over 10 shots.

Here is probably my best 3 shot stander. Super proud of this one. It takes so much focus and steady hands.

Here is a very representative 10 shot stander. This is what I and the rifle are capable of when I’m in the zone.

Finally, here is a 10 shot group off the front rest.

Next step is 50m plinking!

Nice looking rifle and great shooting. What sight are you running on that rig?

On the front I’ve the HW globe with a lollipop insert.

In the back I’ve got a Gehmann 551 diopter annd iris sitting in a Anschutz 6702.

The Gehmann front lens actually popped loose from recoil but I glued it back in place and so far it’s holding fine.

How are your bench poi compared to your offhand poi. Does it group in the same place for both?
I will chime in here. With the recoilless rifles my POI is the same benched or offhand. With the recoiling springers, even the HW55, I can do a rough sight in from a bag, but have to fine tune from the offhand position. My HW55 targets give you an idea of the difference.

Before I started using a diopter, the difference was about 6.5 MOA higher poi from the bench than from standing.

This disappeared when I started using the Gehmann. It returned when the lens popped out. And then went away again when I re-glued the lens in place.

Super weird. But that’s been my experience.

With a scoped PCP I see no difference.
