Wisconsin airgun deer hunting -legal soon?

For the most part air guns have flown along under the gun control radar because most people consider them to be non-lethal "souped up" BB guns. If air guns are developed to the point where they're powerful enough to take big game like deer, it will almost guarantee that they will be classified as modern firearms.

@JKM6442 Deer have been legally taken with airguns for some years now in the USA. What makes you so confident in your assertion? What’s a deer even have to do with such classification?

Why am I confident in my assertion ? If air guns are powerful enough to kill a deer, they're powerful enough to kill a person. Yes, its true that current low powered air guns like Sheridan's, for example, could kill a person but it would take a perfectly placed shot at point blank range. It happens so infrequently that it doesn't raise any concerns. If new laws are passed that allow big game hunting with air guns, and these air guns become more popular and widespread, people that are prohibited from legally acquiring a firearm, but can legally acquire a big game hunting air gun, may do so. If they start killing people with these air guns, that's all some of our legislators will need to hear. Believe me, I hope someone will show me I'm wrong.

Airguns have been powerful enough to kill a person for a lot of yrs. When I was a kid in the 70s a guy killed his paper boy with a pump up Daisy air rifle because kid threw paper against his glass screen door.. Shot him in the back and hit his kidney and the kid died..
Hopefully our govt has enough common sense to not do that.

Airguns have been legal for awhile in a bunch of states believe they made them legal here in Indiana last yr or yr before.

I feel the same way about putting toilets in houses. If people start doing it, it will almost guarantee that houses will be classified as public restrooms.

Here’s a video of a girl taking a cape buffalo with a .50 cal Dragon Claw.

We see posts with this same theme fairly regularly. I won’t begrudge anyone their opinion, but I believe the thinking is erroneous.
The thought that because an air gun can kill a human and therefore will beget government regulation is easy to come to. However, why is not archery equipment regulated? Bows and arrows have been putting people six feet under for over a thousand years longer than guns have. Skewering a human at 100 yards would not be very hard for an accomplished archer these days.
I am a life long archer. I have been shooting a bow since I was six years old. I am old enough to remember when the compound bow first started to gain traction in the sport. Oh how the traditionalists howled about the demise of the sport of bow hunting. “Bows with training wheels will be the end of hunting. Too far advanced and too powerful. The challenge is gone from hunting with a primitive weapon”. And what happened? The sport did not languish in the shadows, it did not cling to the dark hoping no one noticed. It was promoted, it grew exponentially. Archery clubs popped all over the place. States that had a few here and there soon had dozens with the ranks swelling and their coffers growing. They engaged the state wildlife agencies and lobbied for more and longer seasons and got them. Today the number of archers and the acceptance of archery as a legitimate means to harvest big game have exploded and yet, not a single move to regulate them and their use by the public.
If you think you will survive and keep this sport by sticking to the shadows and cowering every time some one mentions air guns you are mistaken. We will just be the low hanging fruit.

They already are developed to be sufficient to take deer and other large game. They have been for years.

Its critical for people to understand anything that violates essential liberties and protected rights is null and void. Past time for people to stand up to anything that infringes upon it.

I believe these weapons that are already powerful enough to kill deer would fall under the lesser weapon laws during reg firearm season.
It doesn't create fire,it's not a firearm.
Neither is a bow,or a knife,but they are weapons.
Many non violent felons have had that right to firearms taken away. This would create another way for them to hunt, and provide license moneys for the state.
Restricting this in any way would be ridiculous.

And why would our government do anything that is ridiculous. :ROFLMAO:
For all to consider ,, you tube videos of the newer semi & full auto versions being posted blasting apart ballistic gel human torsos won't do us any good w/ anti's . I've had discussions w/ some younger relatives that have seen these and have concerns . I believe content such as that , like tannerite for pb's and firefly pucks for airgunners CAN certainly draw the unwanted attention of a certain group "looking " for a cause . Remember that when you hear of "weapons of war" shouldn't be in the hands of civilians ! Oh , by the way , that would include the Lewis and Clark gun and their tomahawks , muskets , swords & bowie knifes ! God forbid these people figure that out !!

Myself and a few others introduced this to Wisconsin legislators in 2018/2019. And have been watching its progress sense then many phone calls to DNR officials and representatives,. It’s taken years to get it up for a vote. And to the guy who said it would be a firearm .knows nothing. Black powder guns federally are not firearms. Each state has there own laws pertaining to that.doubtful air rifles would ever be considered. There are like some 27 startes that allow air rifle hunting for large game. None of them classify them as firearms. It doesn’t fit the definition's. A one pump 1.77 cal placed right can kill. Fingers crossed this passes been waiting along time

Last I found. There was a public hearing on 12/6. No idea when the actual vote will take place. There have been a ton of other bills that need to be amended/changed If it passes. they have to change some of the other regulations so they make sense and air rifle fit the definition of the regulations. The bill is SB586 you can look up its status and amendments on the state site hopefully soon

This is not true... just head south to Illinois.
And other states also consider airguns firearms and they must be registered as such
