Wolverine vs FX Crown for HFT

My wife uses a Wolverine R in 177 quite successfully. It is a wonderful rifle with beautiful firing behavior. She used an Air Arms ProTarget for close to 20 years and this was the only rifle that she enjoys more... enough to pull her away from a VERY good shooting rifle with a VERY good trigger. The firing behavior and lighter weight are likely to be the main reasons but she likes the fit and quiet, dependable performance, also. It took a bit of tinkering to get the trigger down to 5 oz. It's truly wonderful to shoot.
I'm a bit biased but after owning a 25 Crown, I'd not put it in the same league of dependability and durability and the accuracy of the FX 177s has gotten some bad press here... though there are those that claim good accuracy with them.
The Crown was designed as a versatile rifle with big power and lots of tuning options. The WR is just a solid, well set up rifle not meant to change constantly... that's it's superpower. Of course it CAN be tuned, just not at any moment, on a whim.

I sold my Wolverine R to my brother and bought a AA Ultimate Sporter Xtra XS for HFT. The stock wasn’t comfortable for me on the Wolverine R , but the shot count was amazing. I shot the Wolverine R well, but I got that Ultimate Sporter shooting better for me and it feels great with all the adjustability/ tune ability. Accuracy was the same on both shooting from a bench rest.

Can’t speak on FX I’ve never owned one.

How's the shot count on the S510 and your power level?

I'm guessing this means that the FX barrels in .177 are better than some people make them out to be?

I have 4 FX 177 barrels(5 counting the one I traded) and all of them can put
pellet on top of pellets, that’s only my experience so YMMV.

This is my 3 shot group measured 0.58 inch at 100 yards with 12.5 grain NSA, pure luck obviously.

My friend just got a 177 barrel on his Dreamline to shoot HFT, here is this 3 shot group with 10.3g at 30 yards:

And 50 yards:

Again, YMMV. Here is a thought, in UK FX practically only sell 177 so if they sucked as bad as some people on internet says then FX should not be able to sell any guns there.

Edit: my only wish is for FX to come out with 1:12 twist 177 slug barrels one of these years.

The Wolverine is a nice rifle and, like most Daystate rifles, they tend to be accurate and dependable. There are two things I suggest you consider regarding the Wolverine. First, the stock fit is excellent for many folks, but not all, and it isn't adjustable. I tried it, and it doesn't fit me at all, just can't get a good head position with the scope. Second, as with most Daystate rifles, tuning is not very owner friendly, so hopefully the factory tune suits your needs. I really like a stock with an adjustable comb, especially if shooting from different positions. A less expensive rifle that I suggest for consideration is the Weihrauch HW100K, the carbine model, in laminate stock version. That stock option includes an adjustable comb. Another great choice would be the RAW, but at a higher price. But there are many great rifles out there, and it gets down to your personal preference.

Thank you for those target examples and good point on the UK sales. The “rumors” about FX 177 accuracy had me leaning away from FX, but your first hand experience helps a lot.

I feel the same about the stock on the Wolverine, it lacks adjustability. I haven’t tried it yet but I wish it was available with the Red Wolf stock. As for the HW100K I’m waiting until they are back in stock because I’d like it for sub 12 Ft lbs competition and plinking.

You can get an FAC model and easily tune it down. I tuned mine to around 11.5 fpe, and I'm very pleased with it, great yard and short range plinking/hunting rifle. I consistently kill squirrels in the yard, which is usually 35 yards and less. And yes, I understand all models are currently in short supply.

So after waiting and waiting and waiting for HW100s and FX Crowns to come back in stock I ended up buying the Wolverine R .177 in Walnut. Here are just my initial opinions for anyone considering this rifle, maybe once I have more usage I’ll provide an update.

The rifle feels much lighter than the TX200 I’m used to. It’s super quiet but only after putting a moderator on it - a Donny FL Tanto. For the price it should come standard with a moderator and AoA shows it with a moderator on their site, but there was none in the box.

The stock Ergonomics are good. I have medium sized hands (I think) and the thumbhole feels fine, as does the cheek rest. The walnut they use and the stain could be better. I like the TX200’s Walnut better because it is more grey than the Wolverine’s orange tint. The cocking lever is smooth but it feels a little fragile. The shroud is a matt finish, I would prefer it was polished.

Moving on to the the trigger. Out of the box the trigger breaks clean but I think I will lighten it up. The shoe is a bit wider than I am used to. Probably because this rifle is geared toward hunting.

Power wise the rifle is doing 910 ftps with 10.3g and 979 ftps with 8.44g with deviations in the 5-7 range and many duplicate shots. I’ve not had a chance to check accuracy beyond 10yds but so far it beats my TX200.

I’d like to compare it to an FX Crown or FX Royale but I don’t have anyone near me with those.
