Would you eat this one?

Was out punching paper with the 25 carbine, AKA Frankie, and this poor bastard came out on my maple tree. He was scratching like crazy and wasn't concerned about me at all. I didn't change my focus so I couldn't see his coat in the scope, but I put a polymag into his head.

What's wrong with this guy? Besides the obvious head ache!

Notoedric mange is what squirrels get during winter, not transferable to humans or cats/dogs. Hopefully that's what this was. I washed my clothes and self well as a precaution anyways. Only touched its tail to pick it up, but still. Seen a couple squirrels a few years ago with it and being younger and dumber, I probably just licked my hands clean lol!

nice shootin tex. I agree with your decision to pass of cleaning that one. Just not worth the risk.

Brings up a question though, does anyone eat squirrel brains anymore?

Grandad fixed some up when I was younger and spending the summer with him. I never learned the proper way to
get them out though.

Still enjoy calf brains and eggs occasionally,

Looks like someone stuck some bubble gum to his head!
That's what you get when you shoot them in the back of the face!

Good placement, and dramatic results= Polymag sales flyer.

"When you need to turn the back of their face into the front- Polymag, accept no substitutes!"

Squirrel brains are a real bad idea... It is rare but not worth the chance...

I wouldn't normally eat it. Probably take losing a bet, fifty bucks in motivation...

Or a hundred bucks to eat the whole thing RAW.

That story wasn’t real, there’s been no confirmed case of a human getting Creutzfeldt-Jakob from a squirrel. Creutzfeldt-Jakob is a prion disorder in mammals, same as mad cow and chronic wasting. Not endorsing brain eating (I’m not going to eat any) but I think mammals only get it from eating brain matter from their own kind.

Good shot Todd.

She also holds a B.S. in molecular biology and an M.S. in biology from the University of California, San Diego. Her work has appeared in Scienceline, The Washington Post and Scientific American.

I'm going with Rachael on this one, in particular since my step-daughter has a PhD in genetics and has about 20 years in the field now and she and I discussed the matter in the late 90's. But maybe you have sources which disagree. Sure would be happy to read them and pass them along.

I read and like live science a lot, it’s a great informative website. I don’t have any sources to dig out, I’ve read and listened a lot about chronic wasting disease. The story in question couldn’t be traced back specifically to squirrels. The “expert” I listened to about this specifically said you have a few cases every year and they chalk it up to whatever fits best. When you’ve got a guy eating squirrel brains and gets a prion disease everyone says he got it from the squirrel. We don’t know if the squirrel was even infected, AND the article doesn’t say it for sure came from the squirrel, also says that there were an unusual number of people come in with the same issues in a short amount of time (6months) and none of them had eaten squirrel brains.

Also people in the south have been eating squirrel brains for a long time, and this is the closest we’ve ever got to having a confirmed case of CJD coming from a squirrel and it’s really not close at all.

Sorry guys wasn’t trying to ruffle feathers, things just aren’t always as they seem.

PS always go with your expert over me lol. I’m just an industrial painter with a curious mind,
