WRABF…..ERABSF…..USARB 25 meterTarget post 11/30/15

Allen does exceptional work -
I've got a Steyr LG 110 high power that will give any competitor a run for his or her money -\
Allen did a complete tune on her -
I'd sent him a smooth twist barrel along with the standard Steyr barrel -
told him to fit the most accurate to the rifle -
turned out to be the original barrel- so I've got a spare Smooth twist lying around now --

Some experimenting with lead removal --due to extreme fouling
this cup had an 18 grain JSB in it, H2 O2 /vinegar solution - completely dissolved in 5 hours

'this is a JSB 18 grain pellet, same time period - in a chemical called wipe out No Lead- -lots of fizzing but not completely dissolved

the other chemical tried with really no active results were - shooters choice -goo gone and Butches Boreshine -
This is an 18 grain pellet immersed in Hg for five hours- completely amalgamated

'but I wouldn't suggest any of these substances due to the extremely toxic nature of them.a byproduct of the dissolving of the lead in H2 02 is lead sulfide -very toxic!
some have suggested chore boy copper cleaning pads on a cleaning rod----
'I keep looking for a perfect means of lead removal that isn't toxic to humans or caustic to the barrel

Patches after 30 shots

I've got an old air force condor barrel. Going to sacrifice it, cork it and fill er up with the H2O2 solution -
of all the chemicals I've used to date, it's the most aggressive - completely dissolving the lead in a rather violent reaction. Cool to watch it work.
It would have been great if the barrel were stainless steel - but not sure what will happen to chrome moly?
could cause pitting or etching? But I think the trick is in the timing-- maybe less than one hour in the bore, I don't believe that there's a pellets worth of lead build up ?
but I'm going to try it out on old condor

Would need to be put in a plastic hazmat container, ( we use them as per EPA guidelines to dispose of mercury from thermostats)
'once container is filled, would be taken to the local facility -but this toxic substance should never be poured down a drain!
or touched without rubber gloves on---
I am hopful Though -that it wouldn't damage the barrel, because it is the only chemical I've found that acutully dissolve's lead-
I had tried Kroil to loosen the buildup, but really only made a mess-
nothing advertised actually did what the label said. And probably the reasoning is the EPA?
ive heard that some of the major names in use today, have changed their formulas -
think about all the hazardous substances that worked great for their intended purpose, but were later deemed toxic,
I'd also thought of electrolysis - there was a company called Outers that made the device, information is still available on line about it, also still listed on the Midway sales site
called Outers Lead Out 2 --
'but was disconntinued?

Hi CK

One concern is whether strong metal solvents / oxidizing agents might also remove metal from the barrel itself. ie, a barrel is steel alloy - which is predominantly iron with carbon and other metals. An oxidizing agent strong enough to convert metallic lead to ion state (Pb > Pb+2, Pb+4, etc) might also ionize iron (Fe > Fe +2, etc).

If so, the effect of cleaning like this on a repeating basis would be to etch the barrel, losing the polish and enlarging the bore - possibly non-uniformly.

There are similar concerns with abrasive cleaning techniques, such as metal brushes.

Thanks Kim
That is my major concern - the possibility of etching and pitting of the barrel -
I have read many articles on this cocktail -time in barrel seems to be critical -
I'd suspect no more than 15 minutes?
but would that be long enough to loosen the fouling, for removal? Really would need to sit in the barrel hours for the lead to oxidize --
other possibility is to bore scope it, to see were exactly the buildup is taking place, is it were the bore hits the choke? Or the full length of the choke acting as a swage?
thought about lapping but that could be as detrimental to accuracy as the chemical cocktails?
and your right about the abrasives - chore boy and other heavy duty abrasives could -over time severely impact the bore

Converted to the standard twist barrel and installed the HV Jet--
shooting the JSB 13 grain monsters at 805 FPS 18FPE

'also noted no appreciable change in impact - simple adjustment to the elevation turret ---
from shooting open Class --- very predictable results ---
If I get the chance this coming week, will change to the LV jet and shoot the 8.4 grain JSBs at 12 ftlb --
should be standard fare ---

LOL! So soon-- I've been on the waiting list for almost two years now!
Yes the wire goes to an external microphone -which AIDS in picking up the weak blast of the air rifle --
before I received the attachment - was using the Doppler effect option -
but I really love this device-- man it makes it easy to just shoot- nothing really to line up- no cloud cover problems -
it's a bit more money but in my opinion worth it.
