WRABF…..ERABSF…..USARB 25 meterTarget post 11/30/15

None of the tins i have are labeled w/ headsize though? I've measered them w/ my pelletgage, my measuring technique maybe different from yours? I flipped the gauge over & measure with the aluminum side up, to me seems a more accurate way of determining actual head size, i can also see nonconcentric head variations pellet to pellet this way!

Ordered up a Pellet Gauge - ( should be arriving this week ) looks simple enough ? --but have been checking with both a micrometer and caliper -Starrett -
good enough for government work !
But I've yet to find Pellets that are the size labeled on the tin. Also weights can vary drastically -
really poor quality control lately
Sometimes what happens when you produce a product and it's so good that it becomes in high demand -so you cut corners to meet demand and the quality suffers -
Sadly happens in many facets of business

Larger to smaller, but not smaller to larger. Here is a video of a guy using one with the NOE resizing dies. I like how he has mounted it upside down...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rq7CFcjt7dA

I ordered one off Amazon last night for ~$30 with free shipping.

I also ordered a set of dies from NOE for my 30 cal. (http://noebulletmolds.com/NV/index.php?cPath=104)

What I'm finding is my RAW BM500x 30cal likes the smaller size pellets, meaning 7.62mm to 7.63mm. Unfortunately ~85% of the JSB 50gr pellets sort to 7.64mm to 7.65mm resulting in spiraling, tumbling and flyers. I'm seeing similar results with the 44gr JSB, while tending to be a bit smaller on the whole, most are still in the 7.63+ group. I shot with FX branded JSBs (46gr) that sorted the smallest so far with most being 7.62mm and the results were dramatic! I had a (5) shot groups at 75y that a quarter could cover in windy conditions.

I also found this site that has hand dies for 0.177 cal... http://www.airrifletuning.com/

I figure for ~$100 I can play with resizing and see if I see the results. I've got more money tied up in pellets that won't shot straight in my gun than that, lol!

"Coldking"I believe the inconsistent sizes are a big problem and the smaller heads are causing the flyers -not tightly hugging the rifling---
but ive yet to find anything larger than 4.48s - where the tin is labeled 4.52- but I'd love to try the 4.55s
you get the best accuracy with 4.55s?

Pick up a tin of H&N "Piledriver". I got a couple of tins off Airgun Depot and the vast majority are sorting to 4.55mm

If I ever get my Thomas here, I plan to test those myself ;)

As a very knowledgeable air gunner likes to say...

"As long as we keep buying them, they are going to keep making them"

Nothing is going to change for the better until something comes along that is a significant improvement, rather that be in QA that delivers consistent sizes and weights or something completely new. In the mean time there is a hell of a market for the guy that can figure out how to very accurately sort pellets. I'll bet most serious shooters would pay 5x+ what they pay now per tin for a tin that has 100% the same size and weight of pellet.

"Coldking"Just shot a few pile drivers -21 grain - very erratic - shot best when turned around with the hollow point facing the breech -?
even then poor performance - probably good for hunting or maybe in other barrels? Pushed up as high as 900 FPS -
and as low as 860fps - didn't seem to matter - one shot high next shot low --

Save a few of those for when your gauge comes in, I'd be interested in seeing what they spec out as.

What shots best in your Thomas now?

I will gauge them when the pellet gauge arrives Percula. Should be here next week( thanks again for the link Sharroff ) -Jerry Cupples emailed me that it went out.
the AAs for LV and the monsters for HV seem to shoot the best-
I've tried a variety of H&Ns - but so far the JSBs seem to shoot the best-
I spent the afternoon shooting in wild winds - shot LV and HV -
pretty happy with the results - 250s on the LV cards
and I finished a set of HV with A 750 and 39 Xs
cheers

"Percula"
"Coldking"I just ordered a pellet head gauge for them.177 cal- so thanks Sharroff -
i will try this before spending larger sums on an air compressor actuated air comparator -head Sizer

Most of my experience is with JSB 30cal... where the tin will be labeled "7.62". The closest I've come to that was (2) tins of (150) FX/JSB 46gr that produced (12) out of (300) pellets at 7.62, the rest where larger...

So far its looking like my RAW BM500x 30cal prefers the smaller pellets, towards the 7.62mm size, which makes since as many have reported the 44gr JSB working the best in the gun, which IME tend to be smaller than the 51gr JSB.

I thinking about investing in a Lee bullet resizing die set and press. Seems like a small amount of money to get consistent head sizes. Especially since it seems about ~85% of the tins I've sorted are larger than 7.62mm. You can get the custom size dies for ~$40. (http://leeprecision.com/bullet-casting/lube-and-sizing-kit/)

Do you know what the tolerances are on the sizing dies? If you order 7.62mm (.2999") what would you get, 7.62 plus or minus what?
Edit: Just called Lee Precision, tolerances on sizing dies are +/- .0005"
