Events XFT at PRGC on 03/25/2023

The next monthly Xtreme Field Target match will take place at the normal place, Phoenix Rod and Gun Club, on Saturday 3/25/23.

Time of the match will be similar to what we just had in February,. Show up at 1130 for a 30 minute opportunity to verify dope/point of impact, with shooters meeting to follow, and match to start shortly thereafter. Plan on a roughly 1215-1230 start time to the match.

As previously mentioned, the target crew is putting forth efforts to have the modular target bases done in time for this match. That means we might be shooting an entirely new course!

Also, there has been a lot of recent discussion around high BC slugs amongst some of the competitors. There's a good chance that March could see a larger number of competitors in the slug class than typical. And I just may be one of them!

Perhaps March match will be an unofficial Xtreme Field Target Slug Challenge!?!?

So, all you slug shooters within reasonable distance of Phoenix (and that includes you NRL22 and PRS bunch) come on down and give it a shot!!! (pun intended). And if you're not close to PHX, schedule a little mini vacation for the weekend and come enjoy wearing short sleeves on a beautiful springtime day (should be warm enough for that, but no guarantees).

(of course pellet and rimfire classes will also be allowed at this March match)

Hope to see you in a few weeks at the next match!!!

Lots of good info here: https://azxft.com/

PM me here on AGN or call match director Ben Spencer @ 480-694-6973 with any questions.

Looks like it will be a slug fest, with me, Cole, Derrick, Steve and Peykan. Not sure if Gabe is coming, but if he does that makes six sluggers! I think we'll also have six Team Centercut at the event this time.

Will we be laser range finding our targets in new locations this time?

For you sluggers that come to PR&GC, there is an NRL-22 match Sunday AM at Rio Salado. Shoot both!

A little update...

Ben sent me some photos and short videos from the work the target crew did over the weekend. Looks like they have all the targets converted over to the modular base system. They also removed all the face plates and gave the targets a good once over to make sure all is well. Ben said they didn't need to replace any components. THAT is rather impressive. We've been banging away on these targets for two years now, with up to 100fpe. When all the shots from all the shooters from all the matches are considered collectively.....well, that's a lot of energy that the S&S Targets have received. And to be no worse for wear?!?! Heavy duty, quality targets for sure. https://azxft.com/product/ss-xft-targets/

On that note, some acknowledgement is in order for "the target crew." I often only refer to them as that, but their real names are: Scott H., Mike S. Wayne, M, and of course Ben S. Lot of behind-the-scenes hard work putting up and taking down courses. And most of us don't ever witness that actual work, we just benefit from it on match day when there are freshly painted targets to shoot. Thanks guys!

Also, sounds like the shooting mats/stations are staying where the same, but the completion of the conversion to the new modular base system will allow varying target placement. Not sure how much of that shooters will see at the next match, but the potential for entirely new distances at different angles exists.

(My father-in-law passed this morning, long hard battle with cancer. There are 12 kids and they're they're spread all over the country. They're still discussing and planning when they can be all be present for a funeral. One of the day's that was floated is March 25th, so, while I committed to competing with slugs at this next match, there's a high likelihood that that simply won't happen.)

Texting with Ben this evening and he offered some clarification on the situation of probably varying distances from here on out.....

He verbally mentioned at the last match that it'd be prudent to starting bringing laser rangefinders and here's the why: In the past the posted distances were measured with a tape measure. He has some materials coming in the mail to be able to post the distances at the shooting mats going forwards, but he'll be posting lasered distances, not tape-measured distances. His concern was variance from his laser rangefinder to others owned by individual shooters.

So, long story short, there will be distances posted at the shooting mats, but it'd be wise for shooters to work up their dope with their own laser rangefinders in case there's any variance between his rangefinder and yours.

I've been watching the weather forecast for the match and most recent from NWS is this:
"Saturday
Sunny, with a high near 69. Breezy, with a southeast wind 5 to 10 mph becoming west 10 to 15 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 25 mph."

Those 25mph gusts are gonna be interesting!

As for this month being The Slugger Challenge, I've had a couple additional shooters tell me they're considering throwing their hat in the slug ring. Just might see the best slug turnout of any XFT match yet! I understand there will be a couple Pantheras and we've got Derrick sharing some exceptional groups from his Vulcan 3 over here: https://www.airgunnation.com/threads/25-vulcan-3-w-49-5gr-altaros.1286402/

Competition is heating up! Should shake out to be a really good measure of what can be expected from some of the highest BC slugs that are currently available.

I'm personally rooting for a slug that many would consider an underdog but from which prelim testing has shown a surprising amount of potential. I really hope that shooter can get to a competition-ready state in the next few days.

Come one, come all!

@Sturkis, that kill zone on the cowboy target is gonna get @Centercut all worked up into a tizzy about .30 clearance again, lol.
No worries. I’m shooting .25 slugs Saturday. Easy day…. 😎 I’m excited cause I haven’t shot the Panther off bucket and sticks yet. Should be fun!
I think Tony is shooting his .30 Ghost, Sphincter….

Sorry for your loss

I would like to thank everyone for their help and interest in keeping our addiction alive and well.LOL
I also would ask that everyone help me with taking photos this month. I don't believe Franklink will be able to attend. The more photos we have to send him to help him interpret the storyline and write the match report and results. I also want to remind you to bring a rangefinder and more importantly have your dope set with YOUR rangefinder. I will try to get tape measurements every time but since I am working on Friday, and setting new distances time is a factor. So I will measure with tape only after every lane is set up. Hope this doesn't cause too much confusion. I will also try to make sure every group has a rangefinder if distances were not measured with a tape measure. Hope this helps everyone. I am looking forward to an exciting match. Show up and SHOOT!!!!
