Results XFT Phoenix 10/22/22 Match Results

1st and 2nd in Pellet class (Mike S. and Ben S)

Had a turnout of 10 shooters: 2 Rimfire, 7 Pellet, and 1 Slugger. Colorado Chris (I think) was the lone slugger. I was not sent his score card so don't know how he did (I WAS sent the sign up sheet and his name is on it, looks like he shot his Impact and .25 slugs from NSA). There's been mucho mucho mucho airgun comps here in AZ in the past few weeks and I think that factored into only 10 shooters. I know that was personally why I couldn't make it down to the match, well, that and my current overnight work schedule. Other than Gabe that came in from San Diego, I think everybody that made it are local PHX shooters.

From the Xtreme Troyer factor, the shooters had their work cut out for them, and that's not even factoring in the wind, which by NWS data, looks like it was rather nasty.
The highest Troyer was a 56.3!!! and was a 1.5" kz @ 75 yards on lane 3. Next highest was a 1.75" kz @ 61yards on lane four with a T of 45.8. There was also a T of 42.8 (2.25" @ 77 yards on lane 2). Typically the 3" kzs @ 100 yards on lane 3 and 10 are the highest T's (@41.7), but not this match!

The overall Troyer factor for the course was a 36.4 and a 72.8 if adjusted for wind, based on a measured gust of 21mph, and as discussed here: https://www.airgunnation.com/thread...un-report-from-sept-2022-night-match.1274312/

That unadjusted-for-wind Troyer of 36.4 is the hardest overall T we've seen in a while. The average wind looking to be about 8-12mph during the match time, only made matters worse, by the looks of the scores. Furthermore, those switches from ssw to sse would be tough, as that would be switches from quartering in from about 1 oclock to quartering out from about 5 o clock from one gust to the next, at least on some of the targets. And it seems to me that those quartering wind shots are the worst for messing with elevation, in addition to drift. Anybody ever thought of some windicators downrange for these matches? I kid, I kid.

Mike S came out on top again. At the next match, somebody's gonna have to give the windage turret on that Kahles of his a good twist or three when he's not looking. Good shooting Mike. Keep an eye on your rig next month, or don't, and see what happens :sneaky:.

I'd like to point out that Steve M and Tony P were the only shooters to go 4/4 on lane 3. Dunno that all of us feel this way, but lane 3 has been my bugaboo since Ben added it. There really isn't a "close" target on that lane, with a 75 and 100yard target. And it was set even harder yesterday, with a 1.5" kz on the 75 and a 3" on the 100yarder. Great shooting to you two for cleaning it.

Nobody went 4/4 on the offhand lane. Practice up folks, lane 9 is typically a good opportunity to pull ahead, or fall behind, lol.

From what I was told, sounds like it was another fun, but challenging match.

Ben wanted me to add that he was sent a demo scope from Falcon, their new "Endura" model. Most of the shooters were able to take a good look through it and it sounds like the typical with scopes, pros and cons. I looked through it last weekend and it was okay, but not quite as good as their X50. Seems like the main negatives that some pointed out were the somewhat mushy turrets, and the minimum focus distance of 13 yards. That min focus distance would be fine for XFT, but would present a problem for regular ft where targets are as close at 10 yards, and many of us shoot both disciplines. I would suspect field target shooters are a relatively small portion of the market for scope manufacturers, but I keep hoping one (or more) of them will realize that most of us are willing to throw some money at scopes in the search for the holy grail ft scope.

Thanks to Ben and crew for another great match (so I was told).

Yet another great report. Thank you Franklink, for everything you do for us. We wish you would have got to shoot in that wind. I would like to add since the next two fourth Saturday’s are going to be holidays. I thought it would be a good excuse to have more night matches. So November 19th and December 17th will be the dates. These will be Saturday nights and any updates or changes will be posted. I hope Franklink will post a few weeks before each match. The start times will be around 7 pm. Shooters meeting at 615-630 I hope we continue to have new shooters and all the regular's can make it as well.

Had a great time! Wayne and I were a little slow walking from lane to lane. Being out there painting and changing reducers and face plates for 7 hours and then doing the walking during the match slowed us up a bit.
The wind was really tricky and to not even hit steel on lane 3 100yd targets was strange.
The Raw was shooting pretty good but I have to give the credit to the heavy magnets in the pellets. Lol!
Thought the course was great and all the targets were very hitable ( if that’s a word).
We set up lane 1 to commemorate The King Kent Gladden by putting 2) Cowboy targets on it! They were close but KZ were small!
Well enough rambling!
Thanks to everyone showing up and especially David and Steve shooting rimfire. Hopefully David enjoyed the experience and will bring some friends!
Good write up Cole. Would like to see the stats on targets less than 70 yds.

Thanks Cole for the report and Ben, Mike, Wayne and whoever else, for all the hard work you put into this sport.

Ben was a tricky guy. He painted large circles around small KZ's of similar color and those KZ's were not easy to make out. Also he tied/hung some ropes hanging from branches out on the course. Ha I didn't see but one of the ropes and that's after I shot when I was scoring for David.

Why oh why do I have POI shifts, GRRRR????!!!!! Everything was fine at the sight in range, then when I started my first lane I missed, it was either all 4 or 3 of the 4, likewise on the next lane. Fortuitously the targets weren't all shot up yet, and able to see where most misses landed, so I RE-sighted in the .3 mils of elevation as needed. I've had it, I'm going to have my walnut stocked guns pillar bedded as the next step.
But I sucked at offhand, obviously a perishable skill, something I need to practice for.

Congrats Mike S! Oh and quit putting those magnets in your pellets darn-it, lol.

Nice meeting you David and we hope to see you again.

Nice report Cole! Where are you pulling the weather report from?

Art
Hey Art.
This website: https://www.noaa.gov/ In the upper left you can enter a city or zip code.

Then you can click on "see full local forecast"

That'll take you to this screen. You can then click on the map in the bottom right to get a pinpoint information and can click then on the 3 day history to pull up the table I shared in the first post here.

It of course only provides information from the nearest weather station, which in the case of Phoenix Rod and Gun Club, is at Sky Harbor Inter. Airport, Which happens to be 9.2miles away. Sooooo, it's not perfect information, but without somebody toting a Kestril at the match and taking measurements every 15 minutes, it's the best I have access to. (and I think the rules sheet that went around in the beginning mentioned no anemometers)

The weather station closest to my house is only 3 miles away, and what they report seems to correlate pretty well to what I experience in my back yard/pasture (wind direction and intensity).

I don't know if they're any closer or not but Weather Underground has weather stations listed on their site that might be closer. One is just to the West and the other is East of the range.

May or may not have all the details you're looking for.
They're generally pretty accurate forecasts for down here in southern AZ.

I really do want to get up to the great state of Maricopa to shoot more of the XFT matches. I have only shot one match there in Nov. of last year and had a great time. I had just picked up my RW-HP at AOA that morning and it was still in the box in my truck......Ben let me shoot with him and use his gun and it was great! You guys are a great bunch of folks.
Like in one of your other posts, I've had to pump the brakes a little and take care of things around the "house".
We had some folks in from out of state last weekend that wanted to go to the Helldorado festivities in Tombstone so I missed the Oct. shoot. Oh yea, it was our anniversary a couple days ago so there were those festivities on Sat. with our friends as well.
Next month (Nov.) will be the last shoot for one of the couple remaining (shotgun) sporting clays ranges in the southern half of AZ, Picacho Sporting Clays, that a few of us have been shooting at for years....the owners are finally retiring. We were there for the very first shoot 26 years ago (froze our a**es off) so there's no way we're going to miss this final shoot but it's about a 2 hour drive from here. Don't know how to logistically make it work to be in PHX as well. Too much driving.

Maybe December???

The November and December shoots will be night matches

Sturkis,
Thanks, I saw a few posts up the list the announcement about Nov. & Dec. being night matches.

My "logistical issue" is that after the Nov. Sat. night match wraps up I would have a 3+ hour drive home then my friend and I have to leave by 7 am for a roughly 2 hour one way drive back up to Picacho for the sporting clays match on Sunday morning at 9 am.
That's the fun of living about as far south in Arizona as one can get....It's beautiful country, but everything seems to be quite a hike to get to.
Maybe in my younger days I would have attempted this but as an old guy, I'm not even considering it.
