Sounds like a great turnout and the lights worked well and everybody had a great time and had some first timers that really enjoyed it. Etc etc etc.

I'm getting comments like, "it was more fun than daytime field target!"

From everything that I'm hearing, the first XFT night match was a RESOUNDING success!

Detailed standings and a more lengthy report will be posted right here in the next few days.

Well I must say it was fun and a Whole lot cooler. When you first told me about doing this I was skeptical. But Damn you have a Winner!! We had a great time and am looking forward to doing it again. That was true shooting and no way to judge the wind!
I had never shot my new rifle from sticks and a bucket and was impressed on how it shot!
Great job Ben! If you have never shot at night You definitely need to try this! Hopefully someone will post some more pics. Targets worked great! Kill zones were generous but the wind and the dark made it more difficult than shooting in the daytime!
Again great job!

As Sturkis stated....THIS WAS AN ABSOLUTE BLAST!!!!😀🎯

You really didn't mind a miss here or there as you were still so happy from a hit just before! It seemed to take some of the stress away from the daytime shoots of trying to not miss!

Thx

Dan

Here is a couple pics of just before and as the match started. Ben was out on the course setting all of the lights for the targets. We started about 15 minutes later when it was dark

And a big congrats to some new shooters, they shot Extremely well (pun intended)! My buddy Kevin has never shot field target much less Extreme out to 100 yards and he shared my RAW HP22 and shot a 19. I am very impressed by his shooting for having never done it before regular or Extreme. His smile says it all (he has the hat and headlamp on) as he said he had a great time and it was a lot of fun too! And a HUGE thank you to Ben for his hundreds of hours of work setting up and getting rolling this EFT and for his vision of shooting at night to further grow the sport!! Kudo's Ben!!!

Thx

Dan

Hey Tony,

Wish you and the rest of Team Center-cut were there. Well, Derrick was there he shot slugs. I have a question would you be up for a June Night match?

I feel like if the humidity isn't too bad we could have at least one in June before the monsoons come in.

I also have permission to leave targets out for us to be able to PRACTICE!!!!

How many would be up for that and what night? Friday's maybe.???

I am headed to get all the score cards I left at range. I was tired last night after the match.

Franklink, THANK YOU for the teaser results page.

Thank you everyone for being part of my experiment I think it is the most fun shooting at night.

What a great experience! Loved it actually 😃

I’ll be honest, I didn’t know what to expect and thought of high power PCPs, dark walk-ways and fumbling around with scope settings in the dark could be dangerous and cumbersome! In reality, none of that was in the equation however. Ben wonderfully set the course up with a lot of illumination. Targets were bright, paths were well lit and he even supplies a lighted bracelet that made scope settings a breeze. Temps were cool and all had a great time.

My only suggestion, if timed shooting will be firmly adhered to, for these night matches, extend it to a reasonable amount so all can have a fair shake. Some eyes and setups aren’t as easily acclimated to night activities.

I definitely intend to make it out there again some day. You guys that are able to take advantage and attend this venue and all the work and prep that has been done by Ben and others are extremely lucky. Have fun 👊🏼

I've got a bunch of awesome photos but I've been fighting AGN all day to get them posted. Even getting this stat sheet on here was a battle. The image hosting function of the website is spotty right now. At this point I'm feeling lucky that this came through!

  • Dan and Mike had the best near hit ratios, at 15/16 each.
  • The 100 yard target only fell 5 times. Ben was the only person to knock it down on both shots.
  • Newcomer Kevin only missed 3 of his near shots. Very impressive.
  • Same for first-timer Andy, only missed 3 of the near shots, Impressive.
  • The best far hit ratio was 11/16 and Derrick, Van, Ben and Wes each shot 11/16 on the far targets.
  • The only two shooters who knocked down more of the far shots than the the near shots was Derrick and Van. Interesting with Derrick being a slug shooter, but Van was shooting pellets so what does Steve123 say? "Details/facts swallowed up in discrepancies" or something to that effect.
  • And how bout those RAWS?!?!? Took 2 of the top 3 spots on Saturday night. One of the reasons I love XFT is that the structure of the competition doesn't favor any one manufacturer or shooter or shooting style. We've seen many different brands, calibers, and levels ($$$) of scope win and or do well.

Had some big names in the industry come out to shoot this one. Always great to have them, but also really exciting to get some first-time shooters, and even more exciting to see them do well and have fun. From all the reports I received, everyone enjoyed the heck out of it. I also heard that there were collectively a couple of bipods lacking and, typical of field target crowds, equipment was borrowed and lent and shared so that everyone could participate and share in the fun. In fact, I think there were three different squads each sharing a gun. I also heard reports that the weather was nice, with reports that without the sun bearing down, it was actually quite pleasant.

Great report as usual Cole, thanks! A few of my random observations and thoughts:

Weather was great but winds were less than forecast I think, well at least at the shooting stations. Up on the hill at times there was a pretty good breeze. I held off 1.5 mil on one target. Hmm….based on my score probably should have done that on some other targets too 🤔.

I am glad we didn’t use timers, as it took a little bit to get used to working in the dark. I did not have one of those glow wristbands so I used my headlamp when adjusting the turrets, and sometimes it was just a little too bright, and occasionally I would flash blind myself for a few seconds. I tried to flash blind my shooting partner Ben, but he only fell for it five or six times!

The targets were well lit and overall I think I could acquire them in my scope faster, see when they went down easier, and see when they were reset easier than at the daytime meets. As far as seeing where you hit, I think it is more difficult at the night shoot, although I always have problems with that, night or day, as I got old guy eyes.

I wouldn’t have been surprised if someone saw a rattlesnake or scorpion as nighttime is their active period in the desert, but as far as I know nobody came across any. Neither of them are aggressive, but you don’t want them hanging around your shooting pad. I think everyone was careful and kept a heads up around the shooting stations and the walking path.

I can’t put my finger on it, but there was just something about the night shooting that added a different element to XFT that I thought made things more enjoyable and laid back. Appreciate all the work Ben put in to make it a successful event. Also greatly appreciate him allowing me to use his gun, I was really hoping to beat him with his own gun and I tried to sabotage him several times through the meet (flash blinding him and not resetting his scope turrets), but he still came back in the last few lanes and overtook me.

Our nights here are typically very pleasant until the monsoon humidity arrives in the latter part of June or early July where temps stay in the triple digits throughout the night and the high relative humidity makes things sticky. That being said I hope Ben does evaluate a monsoon meet as I think as long as cool drinks are available it is doable.

Good report Cole. Looks like you’ve settled into a good format that has all the pertinent info. Nice!

Thanks Mike.

Yeah, for those that have been following, there has been an obvious progression in how and which specific stats are being shared. That stat table has been molded by interest and comments to be what it is now. If anybody is curious to see #s on some other aspect of the results, just speak up and, if possible, I'll include that in future match reports.

Also, for those that shoot the matches.....I use the score cards to create the equipment columns. If you don't fill out the fields for equipment at the top of the scorecards, there will be holes in the stat sheet. The one I occasionally have seen is, "JSB 25.4" well, JSB makes a .25 and a .22 pellet that weighs 25.4grains. Many have a continuous interest to see which calibers/pellets are winning, myself included. Please note your caliber.

Finally, it is interesting and provides helpful info to know what lane you started on, both for determining ties and general analysis of the matches. Please note which lane you start on. (for example, I was told Van was fighting a breach seal that was trying to blow in the first half of the match. It finally blew around the halfway mark and Ben did a quick replacement with a new one. Van was 8/16 in the first half of the match and 12/16 after the breach seal was replaced. Just interesting information for those of us that care about the numbers).

Ben is trying to put together a free night practice at Phoenix Rod and Gun Club.

The issue that always existed for having practice sessions during the day was conflict with other events, but doing it at night means airguns would basically have the run of the place (no scheduling conflicts).

So, when would be the best time for night practice sessions?

  • The Friday night before 4th Sat AM XFT matches?
  • Second Friday night of the month?
  • Third Friday night of the month?

Not a big deal but I would slightly prefer the second or third Friday for most months, but for June the Friday night before is likely my only availability.
