HUGE thanks to Airguns of Arizona for their awesome prize money, merchandise AND gift card donations!!! AOA's level of support for these matches is quite evident through this high level of generosity.

Longstanding sponsor JDs Custom Designs also deserves public recognition and appreciation. Thank you Joe!

Also thank you to Van, Ben, Sandy, Peykan and whoever else sent photos for this match report. I personally really appreciate you guys getting photos throughout the event, I'm not as trigger happy with the camera as I am with a real trigger, so often end up with very few photos when I sit down for reports. Because the photos came from so many sources, there are various sizes and formats that needed converted, etc. After looking through the folder of photos I liked the final result since it gives us a good idea of the match through various people's eyes.

Weather

Forecasts were calling for high 90s but we were fortunate on Saturday to have quite a bit of cloud cover that really helped the temps from getting too high. I'd guess it was in the low 90s. Saturday wind's were from all directions at times, but seemed to predominately be from the northwest, which would be a wind going outward to the targets from about 7 or 8 o'clock, (coming over the left shoulder). I'd be surprised if the wind got over 5 or 6 mph even at the gusts on Saturday. I wasn't present on Sunday but from the video I'll link later on in the report, it looked like shooters had lots more wind to contend with on Sun.

Post Match

Ben had some sub sandwiches catered and it looks like folks were pretty happy to get back under the shade and enjoy a bite.

Shoot off!!!

Bobby and John were tied for 2nd so they had to settle it by field target duel. Check out all the air movement in the vegetation in the short video clips!!! LOTS of wind to account for.

Final scores and equipment list

Looks like Bobby won the shoot off, I'm assuming John's miss in the short video clip they sent me was the deciding factor.

I was excited to see field target newcomers (relatively) Wes and Martin in the top 3 slots on Saturday but some of competitive airgunning's most recognized names put together a very impressive second day to pull ahead just enough. And Ben is a on a role now in the high profile Extreme Field Target arena, having won the EFT event at EBR last year. and now the first ever Xtreme Field Target Grand Prix match. Seems like John and Bobby were up there near the top at EBR last year too. These shooters deserved that AOA prize money because Xtreme FT is a CHALLENGE! Congrats to all the shooters.

Thanks to all the shooters who came out. Interested shooters are the most important aspect and we're glad that you made the effort to come play.

And the final and biggest thank you needs to go to Ben. He has put his heart and soul into this endeavor, with the sole intent of simply sharing what he enjoys with others so that they can enjoy it too. Lots and lots of time and work and stress goes on behind the scenes. I was squadded with him and 99% of his attention throughout the match was on making sure everything ran smoothly so that shooters would have a good time. He was running around, checking targets and working with all the shooters, even during the match. I was surprised to see he was remembering to put a pellet in before he shot! I bet he asked me at 6 different lanes what he said he'd just read off his dope chart cuz he was so distracted. It's probably a good thing we kept getting his heart rate up because if he can win a match with that much cardio and distractions while shooting, he'd be winning by much larger margins if he just got to show up and shoot like the rest of us do. Please thank him the next time you see or talk to him.

Just another fun XFT event, enjoying airguns and spending time with friends, old and new. That's what this it all about.

(As previously stated, I was not present on Sunday so was making some assumptions, based on photos, about how it all played out. It is a little difficult to write a match report when not present for at least half of the match. So, please feel free to comment with any corrections that need made.)

very fun indeed.....The wind the second day was a battle for sure it kept changing directions a lot even in the 3 minutes you had to shoot the targets. When you saw the scrub brush up the hill blowing in the opposite direction as the flag on the front of your rifle it became a guessing game a few times.

Watching Bobby and John at the shot off was a true learning experience. The video doesn't really show what they had to deal with at all. Well run match with everything shooters would need, snacks, water, shade, air, etc. The catered lunch on day two was perfect!!!!!! Thanks again Ben for all the hard work and the win....

Tony P.

Thanks much for the match report, Cole! (And all your prematch help)

HUGE THANK YOU and CONGRATULATIONS to Ben !!! Amazing shooting, especially considering the distractions !

THANKS also to AoA, JD Custom Designs, and NSA for their contributions! They really are appreciated...

As Cole suggested , the wind was a HUGE influence on Sunday's shooting. It was only a little more intense than Saturday's, but where it was mostly from the north on Saturday, it was literally all over on Sunday. On the sight in range we witnessed the flags around us hanging straight down to standing straight out in EVERY direction ... all within a minute or so. It was very much like that on the course where MANY shots that I took were after adjusting my point of aim from one side of the kz to the other one or more times within seconds before pulling the trigger.

I much enjoyed shooting with John B on Sunday and Congratulations to him, Peykan, and Barb for some great shooting.

For those that didn't make it... you missed out... The heat was tolerable and it was a nice, challenging course and a great time with great people !

Bob

Thank you to all that worked so hard and contributed so much to this event! Thank you Cole for managing to still put out an awesome match report with having missed the second day, true dedication.

It truly was more challenging on the second day. I was partnered with Ben and I'm guessing it helped me try harder. From the start of the course running through my mind was "Damn, this guy does not miss!". Pride had me attempting to keep up with him. I had to buckle down hard, but the wind Gods had other ideas on where my pellets should go.

Hats off to Bobby and John for the shoot off entertainment. It would be hard to be under that pressure and the winds were howling when they got there. It was fun to watch that one!!

Chatted with many people we have known and really enjoyed meeting some new folks. Lots of great prizes and the lunch at the end was a most welcome event!

See you all at the next target!

Yes, it is a fairly new thing, but has been a single event at EBR for over 5 years now. It was started as a regular thing in September of 2020 in Phoenix by Ben Spencer.

There are currently events in Clifton, Texas (near Waco), Ashland Oregon, and in Utah. We're looking to add more GP events in 2023 across the country. AoA is the major sponsor. Its a lot of fun, and has been described like "regular Hunter FT on steroids"... ;) Arizona runs a one day event monthly the 4th Saturday of each month until it gets too hot in Phoenix. The next two day GP event will be the end of April in Oregon.

Thank you to everyone on the labor side that helped me accomplish this. Mike S., Wayne M., Barry D., Scott H., and My sister Bonita H. Drove 17 hrs from Texas to help her baby brother. I also would like to thank all the sponsors NSA, JD's, AOA, and all the behind-the-scenes people like Lauren and Greg and of course Robert Buchanan. We have many new ideas and are talking with new sponsors regularly. I hope to have some exciting announcements in the near future. The sponsors are what makes it possible for ALL of us to do what we love and get a small piece of what we invest back. Most of us would shoot for awards and medals AKA Bragging rights. The idea is to grow Xtreme Field Target to be a place where everyone can have family fun. We had father and son and 2 husbands and wife shoot this time. I am excited to see how the 3 that acquired 3 points each total for the national title @EBR play out. I think having 3 people with more points SHOULD help to make the GP part of EBR EFT even more exciting. Since in FT just being a few points down is very hard to overcome. I barely overcame a 3 point deficit in this match to win. So maybe we will have 5 or more that have a legitimate shot at winning National Extreme FT champion. That should make it more exciting and help it to grow even bigger next year. If I forgot anyone I apologize, I just want everyone to know it takes a team and I appreciate mine more than I can express.

Extreme Troyer Factor

Hardest near was the 2 inch kz @ 75 yards on lane 3 (frog) with an ETF of 42.2 (same as Feb)

Easiest near was the 1.25 inch kz @ 30 yards on lane 6 (deer) with an ETF of 24 (same as Feb)

Hardest far was the 3 inch kz @ 100 yards on lane 3(prairie dog) and on lane 10 (gopher) with an ETF of 41.7 (same as Feb)

Easiest far was the 2.75inch kz @ 75 yards on lane 8 (fish) with and ETF of 30.7

Overall Extreme Troyer Factor for the 2022 XFT Grand Prix was a 33.97 with a high score of 73/96, or 76%

What if.....?

Check back tomorrow for the Extreme Troyer Factor of the course. Ben sent me the kz sizes and I'll have a chance to work on it tonight.

I can work on whatever stats anyone is interested in seeing, just let me know what you'd like to see.

Thanks Cole, I always look forward to the stats you post. Since you asked, I'd like to see the ratio of Off Hand hits to overall position.... I.e., overall score, off hand hits, seated hits, and how that fits overall in the standings. Were the top guys the best at bucket and sticks, or did Off Hand give them that edge they needed to finish at the top?

Thought about Centercut's questions and this seemed like the most straightforward way to answer them. The main idea (I think) was what the final standings would have been, IF there were no offhand shots.

First figured the offhand points. Towards the bottom of the table we've got some shooters that didn't shoot both days and also the image that came through for Ben for some of those shooters was too blurry to make out (and it's the middle of the night and I don't want to wake him up to have him resend it).

offhand stats.1648539620.jpg

Then took points from the offhand lane (right column above) and subtracted from the total points.

offhand effects.1648538956.jpg

The top three shooters would have still been the top three shooters. Bobby and John would have still needed a shoot off, but to determine 1st and 2nd instead of 2nd and 3rd.

Top 5 would have still been the top five. In fact, the top 10 shooters would have still been the top 10 shooters. (I think.....check me on that one).

Biggest difference would have been Ben at 3rd instead of 1st, by one point. Tough to make definitive conclusions off of a 1 point difference though, since 1 poorly timed gust on any of the 96 shots can be a miss or a hit.

A safe conclusion to make though, would be that the shooters who were most prepared finished at or near the top this past weekend, and it looks like that would have been the case with or without those 8 offhand shots.

With all this offhand talk, thought it'd be interesting to note the details.

Offhand lane 9

  • 1.75 inch kill zone at 26 yards for Extreme Troyer Factor of 26.075 (ETF of 14.9 before the 1.75 difficulty factor for an offhand shot)
  • 2.5inch kill zone at 46 yards. for Extreme Troyer Factor of 32.2 (ETF of 18.4 before the 1.75 difficulty factor for an offhand shot)

REALLY big kill zones, even for offhand shots. Surprised me to see the overall low knockdown percentages.

Thanks for working the stats, Cole ! Interesting stuff. Definite direction for improvement...

A couple of thoughts on the offhands ... I feel that a good number of us have been very competent at them in past years but a couple of factors are hurting us there...1. average age...I know how steady things were in the past and maybe a LOT more practice would help that but it's just not there now... 2. rigs not balanced for offhand... our old ft rigs were mostly based around 10 m and bullseye which were purely offhand rigs. Mine have poor balance with the new, heavy scopes and at 25x, terrible trembling... 3. Three minutes to shoot a lane... that's not much time to settle or regroup.

Regardless of my silly excuses , it was a GREAT time and a cool course and I look forward to the next. THANK YOU again for all your efforts , Ben.

Offhand did me no favors for sure. As a woman, over 50 and having had 2 shoulder surgeries it is luck that got me even 1. It was my first shot on day 2, but after that first shot and trying to fit 3 more shots in, in under 3 minutes, I just cant support the gun. I was loving the Extreme Troyer in Lane 9 as it gave a fair shot to the best shot, not the strongest shouldered person (who chances are, will be young and/or male). We do know men are stronger in the shoulders and I personally feel that gives an upfront advantage. (Just ask Lia Thomas LOL)

My .05 cents

Do we really want to decide who wins by who does best on 8% of the course? Or who does best at the 92% of the course? That's a no brainer to me...

Now now, that's not quite what the stats suggest. I looked at it 2 ways (remove points shooters got on offhand lane or give them all 8 potential points on offhand lane) and the same 5 shooters were the top 5 finishers either way.

Not picking on Barb and also because she just explained her shoulder surgery history, she had the one of the worst offhand knockdown ratios of everyone but was still in the top 5 shooters.

What I'm trying to say is that statistically, offhand shots aren't weighted to count for more than any other shot. 1=1. We all just grumble and gripe about them (regular and Xtreme FT) because they're the least fun to practice for, so people don't practice, so then they don't do well on them. Me included.

Personally offhand shots are not something I'm great at. I can usually get some of them but I'm pretty happy at 50%. I've had more than one perfect score ruined in regular field target because I missed one or more offhand shots (ie I hit every single non-forced position shot). That being noted, I voted for offhand when the vote was held a few months back b/c I'll take a nice big offhand kill zone over a tiny 1/2 inch kz @ 46 yards that I can't even see in the budget scope on my main XFT gun.
