Yardage setup on focus wheel

I’m also playing around with different items to focus on. I have a empty can of vegetables that has words and pictures. And a knit hat with a patch on it. Trying to find something consistent. I think I will add a metal field target at the same distance.
I’m getting a new gun but keeping my scope. So I figured I would spend some time tweaking my focus wheel measurements.
Just looking for ideas and suggestions.

You lost me.

During competition you can't use more than 16x to determine the range, nor can you use more than 16x to take the shot. Hunter class field target is 16x scope limit.

Your distance marks are likely to be very different if you set them up for 32x and then have to compete with the scope at 16x.

Yes, 32x is easier to range with than 16x, but using the scope at more than 16x makes you Hunter class illegal.

Determine your yardage marks at the scope power you're required to use for the class you will compete in.

Hi, Jack:

Thanks Griff,

I had a couple shots I ranged at 30 yards and missed the first shot. So I held 1/4 on the second shot and hit. So I thought my hold was off. Went right to the range and shot 30 yard spinners and hit every shot with no hold. So I just mis ranged them. That’s why I am tweaking my focus wheel and getting advice.
I have lots to learn like don’t shoot a down target. I did yesterday on my second target lol. It won’t happen again.

Thanks

Jack

I have settled on using a standard field target for my ranging marks, since that is what I will be seeing in competition. There is usually some texture in the paint or hardware that facilitates fine focusing. Great shooting at the Baton Rouge match yesterday!

I understand the 16 x limitations. Just getting advice on the option to setup the focus wheel at 32x since it would be easier to focus. Then shooting 16x at competitions.

Ranging at 16x, especially past 40 yards is tough. I make it a habit to always focus from the same direction on the wheel to improve consistency. If you zero at 30 yards you should be pretty flat from 25 to 35, and can hold at the top of the kz at 40 yards. It’s that 45 to 55 yard stretch that gets most of us! That, and the dang offhand lane!

Got all 4 kneeling and missed all 4 standing. How’s that for consistency?

Is that FT or HFT ?? In the UK we cant touch our scopes once the first shot is taken ?? I shoot on 9 Mag and PX'd to 22 yards and that's works for me , As said, I don't change that once I have started the course .

Rog

Hello,

They are talking about American Hunter class Field target. Up to 20 fpe and 16x scope limit, and only adjustments that can be made during the match is parallax adjustment. Targets are from 10 yds to 55 yds. Kill Zones from 3/8" to 1.5". Shooters are allowed to sit on a bucket and use bipod shooting sticks not attached to the gun. No other support, braces or shooting glove allowed. Slightly different game from our cousins across the pond!

Rog,

In the US we mostly run under the AAFTA rules, go to "aafta.org" for the complete rule book. Under AAFTA Hunter class rules we are not allowed to adjust windage or elevation once the match has started but we are allowed to adjust parallax and magnification (not to exceed 16X). Here is an excerpt from the rule book that addresses this subject;

Sights
A. Optical sights of any reticle style may be used, but are limited to a maximum of 16 power magnification. Variable scopes of greater than 16X must be turned to the 16X or nearest lower factory marking on the scope.
B. No Windage or Elevation adjustments allowed during the match.
C. Optical sights with parallax adjustment may be adjusted so that the target is in focus. Range (yardage) markings may be used.
