Yong Heng Head Gasket Sealer on First Stage Gasket

When replacing the gasket on the First Stage(Low Pressure) of a Yong Heng should you use a gasket sealer?

I just looked at a YouTube video done by Sambo Cotton and he does not use a gasket sealer.

If things are right with the fit of the gasket and the parts you should not need sealer.

No you do not need sealer. I've taken mine apart and put back with no seals. It seals when you tighten on the bolts.

I didn't use any sealer. Will check tomorrow for any air leaks.

It's up and running to check that it's putting out air, oil and water leaks.

Just short runs for now with no filling evolved.

Will put some more time on it tomorrow with no loads to wear it in slowly.

There is a BIG DIFFERENCE in the volume of air it's putting out now.

I'll have to drill out the hole for the temperature sensor because it's smaller and threaded.

I have it clamped on right above the hole so hopefully it's accurate enough for now.

The only thing you may need to do is to coat the gasket with oil. This will prevent the gasket from sticking to the metal making it a lot easier to be removed when you do servicing the next time.

That's a good idea for the next time around. I've already reassembled my YH compressor and doing some test runs now.

Again ? what has been done to get it fixed before the reoccurrence ? The only cause of low PSI I have encountered on my YH is leakage. The leak has to be so big that hissing can be heard after the compressor is turned off or 4500 psi can still be reached but it will take a longer time

It seems that you have replaced the whole head so wearing of piston rings is unlikely. Suggest to check for leaks which is the most common cause of pressure build-up failure. Turn on the compressor until the pressure does not rise further, turn it off and listen for hissing.

The above photo of what was replaced shows cylinder/head but not piston. I assume that you replaced the piston assembly and rings (low and high) at the same time as the cylinder? If so, looking for external leaks would be my next step as well but defective new rings are possible. A little soap solution on all the fittings, check the burst disk area, and make sure the bleed valve is sealing.

I would not put oil on the head gasket of a HP air compressor

When the compressor is running the oil in the crank case goes through the entire air passage from the inlet to the outlet so I don't think that's a problem.

Just one more thing to pay attention to in case you re-install the first-stage piston ring. The Yong Heng people told me that the thinner side of the ring should be facing downward. The photo below shows the WRONG orientation :

That's a good one! This has to make a difference with how much more volume of air the YH puts out.

I wonder how long have they been keeping this one and and other tips a secret?
