Compressor starts, sounds a little louder than normal but not producing any pressure. Ideas on what might be wrong?

Or maybe just the second stage piston. 12-$18 or 23-$52 for the set if you need them both. Chinese have a habit of not putting locktight on the second stage piston, top part is threaded and screws off, then it hits the top of the cylinder and destroys things. I bought two of these one is still running with near two years of abuse the other died within a couple of hours, three months, of use but I did not turn on the water pump once and did not notice until it smoked. So partly my fault they forgot the locktight?

Are all of these replacement pistons the thicker top version or the original thinner top piston that has been known to fail? Any way to tell?

Could be as simple as a loose/leaking fitting or a bad o-ring in a foster fitting. How old is your unit and about how many hours do you have on it? Is it a Yong Heng (right side will have "Yong Heng" on it) or is it an unbranded unit? There have been changes made to more recent YH's to address the issues with the weak pistons. Some off brand units have a single seal top end piston that is prone to wearing quickly. The moisture bleed screws could also an issue. If the seals that the screws close against are bad then air will leak out of the small bleed hole on the bottom of the block. First try soapy water on the various connection points.

Mine made a bit more noise just enough so I thought I noticed and when I tore into it I found the top 2nd stage piston was damaged but had not yet destroyed the bottom piston. I ordered and received the top part of the second stage piston then ordered a piston set for $24 including shipping because it was dirt cheap. Now I have an extra for the old machine when it goes. I wish you luck in your troubleshooting.

No, not all are the new one's and I do not know how to tell other than having it here to compare or contacting the seller. I am sure my original which is still running after near two years has the old pistons but has had no problems. Probly they remembered the locktight on this one.

Usually I will check for leaks which accout for all the pressure build up failure or slow filling problems that have been experienced on my Yong Heng but I have never noticed any change in noise so broken pistons may be a more likely reason.
