Your thoughts on H&N barracuda Hunter Extream pellets

I've tried a sample pack of these in .177. They did not deform much from my 11.5fpe rifle.

I get the impression they need to arrive on target with a little > this power to deform reliably.
They group pretty well though, as do the Baracuda Hunters.

There was an extensive test somewhere, comparing the expanding pellets at various airgun energies. These 2 pellets came out well.

I shot some a few days ago out of my marauder. The chrono said they were going 950 fps and when I dug them out of the backstop ( I melt them down and cast my muzzle loader balls out of them) most looked to have flattened out almost twice their size. Well, maybe not twice their size, but they were definitely smashed pretty good. I use 4 layers of plywood with carpet remnants on the back. All but a few were stopped in the second layer of plywood. A few of the others made it into the 3rd layer where the ply was shot up a little. Was very impressed. Unfortunately they didn't group that well so won't be using them in this rifle. They do group well out of my titan, but its only pushing them at around 680 fps. Looks to be to be an excellent hunting round if they group well out of your rifle.

I think you may need some more fps/fpe to get them to expand. Here left to right is JSB Exact, Crossman Premier Hollow Point, H&N terminator, and H&N Hunter Extreme all fired from same gun into same target (large bucket of soaked compressed towels).

The Hunter Extreme does the best job around 6-40 yards. It's group opens up after that in my guns (both .177 and 22) as compared to the JSB Exact. Doesn't matter how a pellet expands if it misses altogether.

You may want try the H&N Barracuda Hunter.

It shoots well out of my gun (Disco) and the two I have recovered are here in front of me and both are expanded to the base of the HP hole and are 0.310" in diameter.

Both passed through two layers of skull and were found in the base of the neck area.

Needless to say effect was immediate!

very limited sample, but they have worked on grackles at 50 yards too.

I only hope the next tins will be just as precise.

I use them in a Benjamin Steel Eagle (no mods w/Hawke 9-3/40 Vantage IR/AO), and I've noticed a couple of things.
  1. Super accurate / consistent. Here is a pic of 8 rounds into a 1x1 sheet I used for testing (50 yards).
  2. amount of expansion can vary based on initial contact. I was clearing some rats and found that at about 10 yards I would go clean through them if it was a soft tissue impact / bone first or close to the impact and it, as expected the energy cause to pellet to expand.
  3. 4 shots / 4 confirmed / no runners with these pellets
  4. I don't know the exact FPS I'm firing with that round, as I just received them, but the chrono is on the way and I can give you some numbers in a couple of days.

X27,

I'd pick the Hunter Extreme every time 'if' I thought my target was 0-30 yards. Reason being the H&N is softer, heavier, and expands more than the JSB or AA. It also has a larger head size than a standard pellet so it may or may not shoot well from your gun.

At 40 yards, I'd switch back to AA or JSB domed pellets strictly for accuracy reasons. Below is an example of what I mean. All shots are from a 37 fpe Airwolf with wind right to left (hence being off center as I didn't want my wind correction to be a factor in the group size). The distance is 40 yards into a stump which is my backstop. The red dots are 1/4 inch.

Far left is 10 shots each of JSB 18 then Air Arms 16 then H&N Hunter Extreme 19. The AA and JSB groups are a tight one hole group (except for 1 shot each group where the wind stopped). At 40 yards, the H&Ns are starting to fan out enough I'm not sure I'd be wanting to do a squirrel headshot with them. But look at how they expanded and flattened out!

"Nappyman"I have found that even when the extremes don't expand much, that cross tip has a Tendency to ketch tendons , feathers ect and drag it all out the exit hole. More smash than slice, Diablo more slice, polymags= bust thru
What one would you use for hunting based on what they do to a target once they hit?
A hard target, h/n extremes. Soft to med polymags.
in the end, you must shoot the one with the best accuracy as shot placement is number one ingredient.

I'm fairly new to the sport but after much target practice with JSB Exact King 25.39 gr (FX T12 400) then to a dairy shooting squirrels I learned the shot placement had to be very good or they would run off. The first hollow point I tried was Baracuda Hunter Extreem 28.4 gr and they were accurate on target shooting so on to the dairy and squirrels seem to stop and flop around dead with the same shot placements so although not scientific they have much more effect on game than round nose pellets. I will keep using them as they are very effective and my farthest shot so far is 70 yards, devastating to squirrels.
