Air Bolts

I recently purchased several air bolts from Thurman several weeks ago, and I finally was able to try them out of my 150 ft-lb sumatra. I set my target 20 yards away and sat down to try out these bolts. I had a very short shooting session with only firing two bolts. The first bolt hit the ground 17 yards in front of me. I adjusted the scope and fired the second one. The bolt hit the target but when I retrieved the bolt, the target arrow tip came off and was buried deep inside the archery target block. I immediately stopped and concluded these bolts were a waste of money. I wasn't going to fire off the rest of the bolts because I knew they would get destroyed. I may try them out to see what will happen but not right now. I don't feel like seeing my money wasted just yet. I going to stick to pellets only for now.

I had the same problem with my DIY Crosman arrowgun at that power range. The arrows went through the targets at the archery range hit the ground after and broke a couple of inches off of the aluminum shaft. Destroyed a couple more with a Robin Hood shot and more got the fletching tore up by going into the target to far. Another arrow went completely through the 2x6 and well into the 4x4 holding up the hefty targets at at the range I ruined it trying to get it out. After that I dialed the power back from 432 to 300fps so I could shoot the thing and not destroy my arrows/bolts.

It seems the hardest thing about shooting bolts in either airgun or crossbow is being able to practice with them without destroying them. I know it causes more damage to the target to shoot broadheads, but the channel the broadhead cuts makes undamaged retreival easier. The shaft of the bolt tends to stick to the target layers so I have had some success lubing the bolt with silicone spray.

Damn Bio! That’s nuts. I was just thinking about trying airbolts with my Bulldog, but they’re hard to find and for the price it isn’t worth buying them for target shooting only to destroy them on the first shot.
