ATHLON MIDAS TAC 6-24X50: My honest opinion of it

Well, I bought the Athlon Midas Tac 6-24x50 MOA APRL 4 Reticle (Christmas tree) a little while ago after seeing how it was being praised on You tube, and by Mr. Joe Wayne Rhea. (Thanks Joe)

I mounted it on the Impact X .25 700mm using FX no limit mounts. Took it outside and started shooting at a 25 yards target. To my surprise, it was spot on between 20 to 27 yards without toughing the turrets. I am not certain if this usually happens, but it amazed me when it did that.

I have since ranged through from 10 to 100 yards, in 5 yards increments both with the "Turrets" and using hold over / hold under.

TURRETS: on this scope is really nice with loud positive and strong solid clicks. Setting a Zero stop is the simplest thing with this scope as well as resetting to Zero. The capped windage Turret cover is a nice feature, too.

RETICLE: The APLR MOA reticle is very crisp on this scope and it is very accurate with the turrets when checking tracking Left, Right, Up, Down and back to zero. (BOX TEST)

GLASS: The HD lens on this Midas is super clear and bright. I did not have a problem seeing through and there were no distortions that I noticed.

PARALLAX: The focusing and the measurements on it is as accurate as my Vortex Range finder. From 10 yards to infinity. I tested the measurements to 300 yards.

MAGNIFICATION: Zoom ring on this Athlon rotates smoothly and with enough resistance to be pleasing. I thought the scope had a problem here, because I did not adjust the parallax precisely on lower zoom 10X, and when I zoomed it to 24X, it had a small blur that needed a tiny adjustment of the parallax. Anyway, I was doing this in low light conditions and when I took it in brighter light there were no such problem.

The eyepiece is easily adjusted for diopter settings and the eye relief is good.

Athlon clearly has a winner here with this Midas Tac. It is a solid scope with a quality feel and with a lifetime warranty. I was going to purchase a SWFA 3-15x44 and looked at a Vortex Diamondback, but I am very glad that I made the decision to get this scope instead.

Pros: Everything about this scope is a plus. Looking through the glass is like looking through the window.

If you guys think my review was beneficial, please give me a +

I will include a few pictures:

Cons: Did not have Caps, no lighted reticle (I don't use at night)

Thanks,

Funshine

Totally agree. I have two of these, one with the APRS2 reticle (MIL) and the other with the APRS3 reticle (MIL-Christmas tree). I think for the money they're the best scopes out there. I also have the new Midas HMR 2.5-15x scope, which is SFP, not FFP like the others. Also a very good scope and great for Hunter Class FT. On the Midas TAC the turrets are large enough in diameter to apply a yardage tape so dialing for yardage is simple...

I like that moa reticle more than the mil version which has both .5's on the vertical mixed with the .2's, it's not the best idea to happen in the scope world. Sure wish it were all .2's!

Yep, I concur, it's the best value going at it's price point period, and competes well with much more expensive scopes.

Out of 5 of the SWFA SS scopes owned previously I kept one. The TAC is in another league above in most aspects.

I ordered a Athlon Argos BTR with the same reticle. Came yesterday, Bought it for the Raptor so Ill mount it on something to play with it.

What little Ive messed with it, I'll second what Funshine said. Well made, crisp, controls are very nice.....

The MOA reticle on the Argos is the ATMR. I did not really like the looks of that reticle. As far as I know, the Argos is not available with the APLR4 reticle. If it was, I would have bought an Argos. Instead, I bought a Helos with the APLR2 reticle which is almost as nice as the APLR4 reticle. The Midas has better glass than the Argos and Helos. I might get a Midas TAC APLR4 at some point.

...

I really enjoy the Argos. Nearly identical reticle. Only number are different. Nothing else. ;<)

Knife

The Midas TAC scope listed above has the APLR4 MOA reticle. The APLR4 MOA reticle is much better than the Argos MOA reticle.

If you want a MIL reticle, the Argo reticle is comparable to the Midas TAC. For a good MOA reticle, I prefer the Helos or Midas. That is the main reason I did not buy an Argos.

Just to ask. Will the midas tac be clearer than the swfa 20x?

Will the rets of the midas tac be finer tha the swfa rets?

Usually a fixed power scope will be more clear bc there is less glass, less movement in the body of the scope, etc but the 20x SWFA gets a lil dark, I think the 16x is the max I'd go (it is also the shortest of all the SWFA's for some reason) and I think most people would go with the 12x

The reticle, again bc it is fixed power, will be larger on the SWFA. The Midas being FFP it is smaller on 6x but I think its perfect from 12x on up. I chose this scope bc the reticle (APLR 4) is IMO the nicest reticle on the market (center dot, rather than crosshairs, not too cluttered, its beautiful) The glass is also amazingly clear. I can not see anyone having a complain about the Midas Tac. I got mine on sale for $529 which is incredible but I would happily have paid the $669 full retail price.
