Received my Brocock Atomic XR

I received my Brocock Atomic XR 22 cal from AoA yesterday. These are my first thoughts, impressions, and results.

First, I would just point out that I bought this to use as a mini-carbine. I think it is a little large and bulky as a pistol. As a mini-carbine, though, it is an awesome little gun. It came from AoA in pistol form, but I immediately converted it. It is light and small and makes for a perfect backpack gun. I chose to put a Holosun Red-Dot sight on it instead of a scope (at least for now.) AoA is also sending me a picatinny rail conversion kit, but it hasn't arrived yet. In the mean time, I just installed a Hawke dovetail to picatinny rail that I had laying around so that I could shoot the gun. I put a compact 0dB moderator on it, and it does a good job of quieting it down. I also tried a full-length 0dB moderator which worked even better, but the compact is certainly good enough for me. (There's no problem using it in the rural subdivision I currently live in.) The gun is well-built and is high quality as seems to be the standard for Brocock guns. The cocking action is buttery smooth.

Note that the stock that came with my gun does not have a dial to adjust the power as I saw here: https://www.airgunnation.com/topic/agn-aeac-share-n-compare-rdw-of-the-brocock-atomic-xr/  (It only came with the power adjuster to be used in pistol form.) Maybe the adjuster for carbine is an optional purchase? I've emailed AoA about it, but haven't yet received a response.

The gun came shooting 16 gr @ around 700 fps (about 17.4 fpe). I noticed that I could rotate the spring guide to move it in and out to effectively adjust the hammer spring. I adjusted mine to shoot 18.13 gr JSBs @ around 690 fps (about 19.2 fpe). The shot count reduced a bit before falling off reg, but I'm OK with that for now. I initially adjusted it to shoot 18.13 gr @ 700 fps, but the gun seemed to bark too much at that setting. The 10fps just seemed to calm it down, so I went with it. (It could have been in my head, though.)

The gun came from AoA with around 230bar of air. The max on the dial is 250bar. The red region is 200-250bar. I wasn't sure I the max fill pressure is supposed to be 200 bar or 250 bar or somewhere in between. The manual is a generic "XR" series manual and doesn't contain specifics about the Atomic XR.

The air tube itself has "MP250" written on it, so I assume the max pressure is 250bar.

When removing the trigger guard/grip assembly, one must be careful to not lose the small spring in the screw hole directly underneath the power adjuster. This spring provides the resistance necessary for the power adjuster.

This is an 8 shot group @ 25 yards. I was on a bench (with bags). I'm very happy with this group, since I was only using a red-dot sight with no magnification. I imagine it could do even better with a scope.

This is a shot string with my current tune. I started at around 230bar and it appears to fall off the reg at around 120bar (after shot 20).

And here is the data:

I'm quite happy with that SD (2.28 fps) and ES (11 fps).

All-in-all I'm happy with the gun. It'll be a fun addition and will serve its purpose. I would still argue it is overpriced for what it is, and I would never use it as a pistol. As a mini-carbine, though, I think I'm going to love it.

BTW the Brocock gauges are kind of 'bass-ackwards' in the U.S. market. In the sub-12 ft lb market, 200 bar would be max fill, hence the red zone above that pressure. But in full power markets the gun has a working pressure of 250 bar.

Thanks for reporting on your new gun. I think that folks are going to find these built really well, and of a very handy configuration as a carbine.

Subscribed for more updates. Thank you for the initial thoughts.

What is the overall length with that compact 0dB installed?

@Scouty It's about 27" to 30.25" depending how far you extend the stock

Ah... that makes sense. Thanks for the clarification @TMH.

Would you when you get a chance post a shot string from a 250 BAR fill? Your current 20 shots on the reg. seems low. I expected at least 30 regulated shots.

Looks like I'm approximately inline with what Steve found here:

I'm definitely going to have to try crosman hollow points. He had very good results with them.

Also, this confirms that the external spring adjuster for carbine is an extra $150. 😒

Wow, so AOA ships it with a free HS adjuster for a pistol? Knowing full well that these will be 99% of the time used as carbines. They up charge $150 USD for the HS adjuster on the stock, which is the more useful of the two adjusters? Calling this a pistol is a "SHAM" the thing is ludicrous as a pistol. So wait, when all is done you're in for $1650. plus tax? After watching Steve's video, even after he posts all his specs on the thing, he agrees that it's best as a carbine. Watching him handle it as a pistol? The thing looks like half a rifle in his hands. Man I've already figured the PCP game is pricey. But conditioning consumers to spend close to 2K and above for pellets guns is a marketing master stroke. Was excited for it but the marketing bullpoop and up charging is a big turn off. It excels as a SBR, as a pistol?, a marketing joke. The lack of a FAC pistol license in the UK, shows that the pistol part was a dumb afterthought. Way to go AOA, forcing Brocock onto the "hype train"...

This was an interesting gun to me, not at all as a pistol but as a short, handy SBR/carbine. Even more so after watching the new video on Steve's vlog channel.

I would really tend to agree with Steve's findings. The extra $150 for the external HS preload adjuster it nice, but not necessary. This gun will likely be tuned once for a specific pellet, and then left alone. It will take more of your time to achieve that initial tune without the external HS adjuster, but then you are done and will never really need it again. Not a 'necessary' extra expense.

And anyway, if we look at all the 'extra' expenses we make on accessories for any of our air guns, the extra $150 charge for the external HS adjustment is very typical for the market. Whenever I am contemplating any accessory, I always take a step back and am continually surprised at the cost of so many accessories, as compared as a percentage of the actual cost of the gun. Is a spare bottle or something else really 'worth' 15-20% of the cost of the gun? Sometimes this really helps my potential impulse purchasing.

In the end, I'm not going to purchase an Atomic XR. In my opinion, and in my hands, the Impact Compact is likely the very best configuration of Impact. I absolutely love what my MkII does in my hands, and my recently received M3 is even a little bit better. The ground squirrels who are trying to destroy the safety berms at our range absolutely hate Impact Compacts!😁 Last weekend at the range I tested the M3 Compact without its silencer for the first time, and the gun is still really quiet. Win-win, as now it is even more compact and handy. More expensive up front as compared to the Atomic XR, but a little more versatile in my opinion due to its better power, and therefore more usable range. And I can tune it all I want externally without spending the extra $150 for another accessory.

I still think that I would like the Atomic XR and that it is a quality air gun, but it would just be too duplicative for my current collection.

I do agree that the external adjuster for the carbine form isn't really totally necessary. I mean, once I find the tune I want, I really don't want to fiddle with it after that. I would rather have had a choice of which adjuster would be included if only one could be included. The pistol adjuster is of no use to me and will be in the factory box in my storage. Given a choice, I would have replaced it with the carbine adjuster.

@Scouty It's about 27" to 30.25" depending how far you extend the stock.

Thanks. If you get a chance measure the length of pull in the fully retracted & extended positions.

about 13.75" - 16.75"

Nice. I've got a folding adapter here & it looks like my younger son would still have a reasonable LOP. Assuming it would fit.

A few more shot strings - taking care to start at 250bar.

First JSB 18.13 gr:

JSB 18.13 plot.1622918733.png

jsb18.13 table.1622918744.png

So with my current hammer spring setting, I'm getting about 21 shots at around 19.2 fpe (~690 fps). Very nice SD and ES.

I decided to see what I would get with the CPHP 14.3 gr without adjusting the spring. Here are the results with the transfer port adjustment set to high:

CPHP 14.3 plot.1622918840.png

cphp full table.1622918852.png

So around 20 shots at around 17.8 fpe (748 fps).

I also turned the transfer port to mid setting to see what affect that would have with the CPHP:

CPHP 14.3 plot - mid power.1622918931.png

cphp - mid table.1622918942.png

So about 23 shots at 16.2 fpe (714 fps).

I haven't tested the CPHP for accuracy yet, but my hope was that I would leave the hammer spring adjustment alone and have the option to shoot either the JSB 18.1 gr or the CPHP 14.3 gr (at either mid or high transfer port setting). Steve (AEAC) found 721 fps to be the sweet spot for CPHP, so I may just be a little high and a little low with the transfer port settings using this hammer spring setting.

One thing I note is that Steve's gun is falling off the reg at around 110 bar, but mine seems to be falling off at 120-125 bar. I may be able to adjust my reg down a bit to squeeze some more shot counts out of it. For my purposes, that's not a priority, though. The reg is behaving so well that I will most likely just leave it alone.
