Bullpup Butts(tocks) – Cut Them Off! – Why Are They Not Shorter?

OK, I’m being serious here – WHY are the buttstocks of bullpups often so long?

Disclaimer: Please, if you don’t like bullpups, that’s quite all right, but reading this thread probably is going to be a waste of your precious time. And sorry my Canadian friends if your country thinks that bullpups are dangerous and must be outlawed, that’s just another helicopter-government – and I feel for you.

The Reason Bullpups Exist
I tend to agree with Wikipedia on this – the reason bullpups exist is to deliver the same power and precision – but in a much shorter and lighter package. So, with the same barrel length, the goal is to go as short and light as feasible.

First Surprise
But to some size does NOT seem important...? That must be Airgun Depot’s stance. In their (otherwise very helpful) series Head to Head they compare different airguns with each other, and assign points to each to arrive at a ranking. Well, size is not among the criteria that earns any points...! Go figure.
For instance, in the article below, a 27% difference in size was not important to the reviewers.... (7.8" = 19.8cm). ?!?

Second Surprise
I liked the performance/price ratio of the Artemis P15.* But I liked the looks of Diana’s version of the P15, with the Minelli stock, so that’s what Santa brought me in April (yes, shipping to Peru takes a WHILE).
Now, look with me at the Skyhawk:** There is a long and heavy part of woodstock after the action that extends far beyond the action. There are well over 3 inches to this gun that do little if anything to improve the shooting of this gun (unless I’m missing something here...). If I wanted a gun that long, then please, don’t give me 3" of dead wood, instead give me 3" of extra barrel that will translate directly into more power or more shots per fill....
And the argument that these extra 3" are needed to increase length of pull (“so that my trigger hand and my forehand will be positioned farther away from my body”) – well, I suggest to design the trigger and the forestock 3" forward, instead of the buttstock 3" further back – and voilà!
* 26.6" (68cm) OAL = P15
**29.0" (74cm) OAL = Skyhawk

.... [... text continued in the next post, I don't understand why I can't continue typing, I get error after error...] ....

.... [continued from the previous post...] ....

My First Question
So, WHY do manufacturers waste precious inches on unnecessary stock?
Unnecessary – that’s what it seems to me at least (and maybe I’m just dead wrong).
Unnecessary like bloat ware – I’d call them bloat stocks, i.e., longer than necessary.

... cont. in next post [this site isn't working right...] ....

My Second Question

So, WHY should I not simply CUT OFF the bloated buttstock? – (beside the more obvious reason of getting written off by most people as mentally deranged).

Bloat Stocks

To illustrate this curious buttstock phenomena, below is a sampling of 40 bullpup photos (also as Hi-Res photo for download at the link). See for yourself how some bullpups have efficient stocks, and other flaunt bloat stocks.

Happy shooting!

I was thinking you could throw the stock away, duct tape the action to the outside of your upper leg, then your hands are free to scratch or whatever, point your knee and shoot. Cocking is at your fingertips. By golly I think we'er onto something. Works great sitting or laying on on your back or side. Less weight, easier on the back and shoulders, Might have to wear chain saw chaps on the gun leg till you get good at it and of course steel toed boot. But what the heck new ideas need some tweeking.

If crows can learn to use tools then we sure can learn knee shooting.

I like them short and light, but I'm only 5'5" tall and have short arms. Not sure where this 14-15" LOP came from in the airgun world. In firearms, it's usually around 13.75", I prefer 13". I don't believe the average man is 6' tall; more like 5'8"-5"10" tall. I always look for a synthetic stock. It's lighter (usually) dimensionally stable, and durable. All my guns are for hunting, and I have never been a "wood worshiper". I don't buy them to stare at-made that mistake once. I buy them to hunt with them.

Note also that you NEED to sufficient eye-relief distances of scopes relative to where the mount points are.

Yes, FredAZ, if that is advice for me, thank you. I checked and my rail is good for another 3" to move the scope forward, so just what I need with the shorter stock.

Now, in case you're commenting on why manufacturers say bullpups NEED a longer buttstock for sufficient eye relief I would say: — Dear engineer, just move the scope rail a few inches forward. Done deal! 😄

All my guns are for hunting, and I have never been a "wood worshiper". I don't buy them to stare at.

REALLY! Wood Worshipers?! And you aren't one of them? — I like you!

I have never eaten from that forbidden fruit of wretched idolatry! 👍🏼 (Then again, I don't want to be a hypocrite, so in the spirit of full disclosure..., I worship FPE.)

WOW! — IMPRESSIVE, Mikepr!! 😊 Very cool that you are able to do something like that! 👍🏼👍🏼

I'd go for a stock like that! I'd sell my OEM black Skyhawk for it.... 😊

Say, I see that the scope rails of the two guns are different. Would you have any advice how to get get a picatinny rail on the gun instead of this to me useless dovetail? —— The thing is I don't want to raise my rail any higher with an adaptor rail than it already is, I'd love to lower it...

Matthias

The rails are the same, but i change it front - back

The problem is that the optic is 35mm tube and i can use only the original mounts

Probably P10 rail scope, fits P15

Cutting of those "long" butts would help put them into the actual "meaning of" the term Bull Pup. Just because the receiver has been moved back...when the full length is still about 28"+ long, that really doesn't fit the bill / meaning very well.

I'm 6' and 250lbs. My short little Lelya 2 and BP-17 fit me just fine.

In case the whiner's don't understand, the human shoulder moves, as well as the elbow and wrist..! The human body can do some great things...as long as the owner lets it..! Like I said, they fit me just fine, and I even have shoulder damage from a motorcycle indecent years back.

Band saw time..! I can think of one or two others I wouldn't mind having, but, some sort of wood saw would need to be used.
