bum bag FILLER MATERIAL

Aloha Beginner,

I recently had to fill my shooting rest bag and before I used sand but it was a bit heavy to lug around so my wife had some left over foam beads that she used to mix with slime for the kids to play with. So I filled the shooting bag with what she had and bought more off of amazon, now my shooting bag doesn't way much and is very easy to carry around.

Aloha, Keone

Oh man . . . Choices Choices!

I used to use a few different types of materials when it came to padding..
[I did custom builds, repairs, etc. for vehicle and cycle seats]

Most were denser, then topped with another softer layer..
Of all of them, I really liked the 'memory foams' the best.

That's pretty much what mattress and pillow fill is.. Just cubed / shredded..

Check here - It'll give you an idea of some different blends / options.

I use the type of foam that pyramyd air uses to pack it's pellets for shipping. I cut it into random sized pieces. I add a handful or so every year.

I like it because it's lightweight, and rebounds well from compression. I fill my large bumbag 3/4 full so it forms a nice doughnut around my bum. It's also nice having that much fill for uneven terrain to fill up low spots. Also the foam will dry overnight mostly if it gets wet. I think it weighs around 3lbs as well.

For the same amount of fill I use those hulls(not scott) get pretty heavy. They don't move/mold as well either. The plastic I use is recyled to start then repurposed by me. Though if all you desire is a small/slim pad to sit on buckwheat hulls work well. Avoid styrofoam beads, they will only compress and get everywhere when filling/refilling.

More importantly experiment with any fill material and level of fill you can.

I use buckwheat hulls....and like their support. However, they are quite heavy. My old bum bag was about 13lb....and I just got a new one that is made to just be barely under the maximum size. The new one with buckwheat hulls is about 18lb. A friend just got the same bag and filled it with granulated cork. He says The support is similar to the buckwheat, but it weighs less than half. I suspect I will try some when I get tired of lugging mine around.

I have had the same bag for the last twenty years. I filled it with ground up cork. Really light but also firm.

Granulated cork here. Not real heavy. Not as light as Leo's bag at 2 lbs but I'm guessing mine is 5 lbs filled. Really keeps the bag steady. Does not compress or deform like foam pellets.

I ordered 8 lbs but only use about 3 1/2lbs per bag. The recycled cork is much cheaper (and just as clean as new cork....at least my order was)

I bought a bag of granulated cork about 15 years ago and have been using it ever since. Have filled three different bags with it. I mould a little hollow in it before I sit and it really holds firm, especially if the ground is rough or not level.

The bag I use most is made from Rawhide on the bottom and suede leather for the tops and side, so I was not really concerned with weight. 💪😄
