Caliber Conversion Process: RAW HM1000x .25 cal to .30 cal

Mods, I'm not sure if this is the correct place for this post or if it should be in the 'PCP' forum-please move if appropriate.

Guys / Gals,

One of the things I was looking for previously was a guide on how to convert between calibers (with similar power settings) on a RAW HM1000x. While I found several members on the forums that had experience with the process, I didn't find a helpful guide-so I documented the process and put it into a 'guide' to share with others. I have sent this to Martin, and Ken (SPAWeapons.com) to look over and they have both blessed the process-so I sent it along to several people in the RAW review thread.

Now that the forum has a 'upload document' feature, I'm uploading a copy of the RAW conversion procedure in case anyone wants to download a copy of it for their use. I realize this isn't the right guide for all guns, but it will give you some insight into the process, and what a 'probe' looks like, how involved the process is, etc. Since the RAW platform is really an evolution of the Theoben Rapid action-and several other guns have spun off of that design-the guide may be very helpful for several different guns from a number of manufacturers-though I can't guarantee that for sure, so follow at your own risk (though it's pretty easy, honestly...).

Lastly, one comment: I selected the calibers in this guide because they are basically one single regulator setting-so I don't need to make any adjustments to the regulator during the conversion (in either direction). And, for me, I'm not even adjusting the hammer spring tension either-just a straight swap over (and the results have been GREAT).

Thus, I'm starting this thread to pull this one out of the RAW Review thread and up to the top level for easier access and for better visibility as this topic comes up fairly regularly. Hope it's useful for you guys. Please: if you find errors, need clarification, or want something added: PLEASE let me know and I'll include/update, etc for you.

Update 12/30/24: these instructions are written for the original RAW (Martin produced) and are not written for the Air Force manufactured units. I'm hoping to add an AF version and will provide an addendum once I understand the changes.

What internal modifications were done to go from 50 to 60 foot pounds? And what were the fps. Differences with the 34 grain pellets

In other words, i can switch my .22 version to a .30 version? ( course i imagine id have to up the regulator and tinker with the hs)..if so,how much for the .30 barrel and probe, etc to do this?? Very interested..

Sorry, I've been off the forums for a while and was just checking in here again. No internal mods were done when switching between .25 and .30 cal-just the barrel and probe swap. As far as going from .25 cal at 50 ft-lb up to 60 ft-lb, you would need to discuss that with Martin. Lastly, look up my other posts if you are interested in what fps for 34 grain pellets. I've done a lot of posting on ballistic coefficients for those pellets so the data should be pretty readily available in my ballistics posts. Hope that helps?

Sorry, I've been off the forums for a while and was just checking in here again. All my work and documentation was done prior to Martin selling to Air Force, so I'm not sure what the pricing is. I believe Martin is still doing work on then side for custom applications-I would reach out to him directly.

You may be able to convert from .22 up to .30, but you will likely have to send the rifle to him for work. I believe he sets the guns up so a 1 step cal change is most likely to be successful (.22 to .25, .25 to .30, etc) beyond that, there are other things that need to be adjusted (plenum volume, etc). I think I asked him about getting setup to run mine as a .22 cal as well, but he advised it wasn't ideal given how my gun was setup for .25 / .30 cal from the start.

Please understand I'm going by memory from discussions with him several years back so my replies now may not be 100% accurate. I would reach out to Martin directly with your questions.

Nice instruction sheet. Please note that the newer rifles don't have those two teensy-weensy grub screws that retain the probe. I've been told that there is some kind of internal retaining ring that keeps it in place, therefore, requiring a different disassembly procedure. If anyone knows about this, please provide an addendum to this well written document.

Thanks for that update. I'm considering adding a RAW Mini Hunter in .22 cal in the next couple months. I'd like a .20 cal rifle as well, so maybe I'll talk to Martin about buying the .20 cal barrel and probe so I can swap between those to calibers. Either way, once I get the mini, I'll pull it apart and provide an addendum for the AF manufactured models.

There's a slight chance I'll consider a 'micro' instead, but I'm leaning towards mini as it will be more for hunting on my property.

I have the Micro in .177. Ok for small pests up to 40-50 yds. I think the Mini would be more versatile for you.
