Considering buying a .177 DAR Gen 2

I would like to hear from owners, especially those who actually own the DAR Gen 2 in .177 as to what I should expect if I go though with the purchase.

Intended use will be pesting in my backyard. How quiet is it compared to the Marauder .177 or Fortitude .177? Does it need different baffles to get it that quiet?

The DAR website is woefully short on details, IMHO. And apparently they don't take credit cards? Check or bank draft only.

Can it easily be tuned to 12fpe or less? Has anyone used CPUM 10.5 pellets with any luck? I have several thousands of them... (grin)

Thanks in advance!

Kerry

Tough to beat at current price. Can Be very accurate but need trigger work. Nice stock and one of the best designed magazines in the business. Currently shooting jsb 10.3 @ 920. A guy could spend less then $1000, buy all 3 calibers and be done. Gta forum is best source of info on Dars.

Thanks for the reply. Fortunately I can read on GTA again, but I can't post as I was banned on GTA. Not whining. I deserved it, but I do wish they would allow me back... (heavy sigh) That also means that I can NOT use the search function on GTA. Yeah, I could try and create an alternative account there, but I really don't want to do that.

What is wrong with the trigger? I did the screw mod on the Fortitude and it isn't great, but I can get used to just about any trigger within reason. (smile)

I tried to create an account on their site and apparently they have problems. I never received the confirmation email (yes I always check the spam filter) that would allow me to create one. I tried more than a few times.

So far, I am much much less than impressed with DAR based on their website alone. Oh well... they have probably lost at least one sale and based on their website, I don't think they really care.

Just a tip for searching. Go to your favorite search engine. and type in "site:" and the website address after your search terms to get site specific stuff. Usually works better then the site search itself.

Example of what to type - dar .177 site:gatewaytoairguns.org (just copy and paste the following text if you have questions as to how it should be typed)

+1 on what Bigtinboat said.

Thanks for the reply, but I already know how to do that and I have. Most of the posts concern the Gen 1 and almost none of them talk about the .177 Gen 2.

The way I do it is "site:gatewaytoairguns.org DAR Gen 2 .177". Or whatever I am searching for... Works with DDG or Google. I've been doing it that way for many many years.

I was hoping for some input from people here who actually own a DAR Gen 2 .177. Even those who actually own a .22 or .25 could chime in because I am sure any problems these guns have would probably be in all calibers since the only difference in the gun(s) is the caliber. Everything else is relatively the same as far as I can tell. Again, the website is short on the details. Oh well, at $269 for the .177 and $38-40 dollars for 2 more magazines (it comes with one) that makes it under $310 with free shipping.

Good price, but given the problems I have had just trying to create an account on their website, makes me wonder about after the sale service. (sigh)

I am willing to bet I am not the first sale they have lost due to such problems...

Just curious on why another 177 if you already have marauder and fortitude? This isn’t going to be better, it’s cheap but why buy something you don’t need?

if anything get the AA T200 and you can even add a mag, that or a gamo BSA guns with hammer forged barrel that is super accurate. I just don’t see why you would buy something that’s same as the fortitude and not as good as the marauder.

From what I’ve seen, the main issue with the gen 2’s was leaks. They took them off the site for a while until they finished working through their inventory, replacing the seals. That was completed about a month ago but I haven’t seen much on the forum in the interim.

I agree, the call to order thing is bizarre in this day and age.

My early gen 2 in .22 has been completely trouble free. No leaks, no regulator quirks…just a lead laser with either JSB 18.1 or 15.9gr at about 30fpe. It has become my go-to for pest control in the 50 – 70 yard bracket which is the furthest I go. It’s an absolute savage. The chipmunk factory at the neighborhood permission is struggling hard this year. It can be standing in the corner for a week and put the first shot through a chipper’s control room at those distances. That kind of confidence is a beautiful thing.

The one thing I was compelled to do was dress the contact surfaces of the trigger group. Then I added a ball plunger to the trigger frame for a tactile wall just before the sear releases. A very worthwhile effort that has repaid itself in spades.

BTW the gun’s design makes it an easy candidate to adapt an SSG but mine is working so well that I decided to just wait until it needs servicing.

I don't have a Marauder. Just the Fortitude Gen 2 in .177.

Looking for something "inexpensive" as a backup and will also be capable of shooting at higher fps for those rare times when I can shoot longer range than ~40 yards.

Must be quiet, so I was hoping that I could find replacement baffles for the DAR that worked better. So far, no luck on that either. Too bad the DAR can't use the Marauder baffles... or can it? I don't know.

Thanks nervoustrig. Actually, I think it was your posts about it being your go-to pest gun that got me interested in it. Thanks for the reply.

BTW, how quiet is yours compared to a Marauder if you can make that comparison.

Thanks again!

The factory shroud and baffles do a very good job on the .22 at the 30fpe power level. Very similar to a couple of Marauders I’ve shot despite the fact they had the benefit of operating at higher pressure.

Several times I’ve gotten back to back shots on squirrels and chipmunks, or had a mourning dove stick around after a squirrel folded up less than 5 feet away.

I have a .25 as well set up for 45fpe and it’s quite a bit louder. I live in a subdivision with neighbors on either side of me. It’s not so loud as to draw their ire but I’m not expecting any opportunities for back to back shots.

Thanks for that info.  I have tried to find a picture of the DAR baffles with no luck. Could you please post some pics of them? I imagine that a 16 inch barrel will be louder than the Marauder or Fortitude, but then again maybe not. I doubt I will be looking for max power anyway as I don't have many chances to shoot over about 40 yards most of the time for pesting, although I do (rarely) have a chance to shoot out to ~60 yards for a pest. Maybe once a year, if that... (smile)

Thanks again!
