Could a gun cause this hole in window glass

Hello,

Sorry, not contributing in any way. Just looking for some opinions. Please look at these pictures. Would you be able to tell me if this hole is caused by a firearm of any sort ?

Ok, so. This window is single glazed about 851mm in width and 1046mm in height and I think about 8 mm in thickness - seems pretty solid as kids keep flinging their toys at other windows sometimes and its been alright. The window is in Australia - so its kind of a big deal to discharge (or even own) a firearm in a residential area. So the police didn't even want to come out and look assuming it to be a vandal who has thrown a rock. But all my mates who have looked at it think it could be from a gun. The following are facts and observations :

The fence 6 feet high is at least 12-15 feet away from the window. So it couldn't have been a kid. The next door neighbours are not well so they don't even step out of the house.
On the inside, didn't find a pellet or a bullet casing. We have got a robot vacuum cleaner and checked its trash can - didn't have anything other than trash.
There are children's toy boxes next to/under the window, so if the pellet just hit the window and fell inside then its lost forever with the numerous (some of them broken) toys. No other damage to other walls following the trajectory of the projectile. Nothing in the window sill or the frame either.
Didn't find any projectile on the outside. There is concrete for about 6 feet outside the window, beyond which there is a little garden with rocks and stuff. There was nothing on the concrete, so if something bounced off the window it bounced at least 6 feet away.

I am just trying to find what could have caused such a hole.

Could a rock thrown with a sling shot do this ? There is no lawn to mow - so no lawn mower did it.
Didn't find the projectile. I would think its too hard for a bird to cause this damage. No dead bird found either.

The only possibility could be an air gun/rifle. So am here to get an opinion from people who are more experienced to guns. What do you think caused this ?

Cheers

That my friend is the home of another foreign object, particularly a rock. I say that because the size of the hole is huge! Bullets will make a smaller hole with more webbing around the hole.

I’ve shot my share of windows to know what a bullet hole looks like in a window. Plus there would be a hole in the back wall! “Whatever it was it was a nice sized object You can see the impact size chipping the circumference.”

P.S

wasn’t a pellet either!

A gun may have caused that, if swung with sufficient force. It would potentially damage the sights or even the crown of the barrel. I doubt any to would use their gun as a blunt force tool though. Most gun owners use the guns to launch slugs or pellets, rather than use the gun as a hammer or a pick. We pay a lot of money for our guns, and noone I know of would abuse them in such a manner

No, a gun was not used to beat a hole in your window.

The size of that hole it might’ve been a gun 😂😂😂😂

Right. Thanks fellas. Good to get an opinion from you guys.

If it was a rock, I reckon someone's thrown it really really hard - otherwise just the glass would have shattered. No ?

And if it was thrown really hard, I would have found the rock inside the house - which I didn't. Now am hoping its a big strong bird trying to pick a gecko off the window. Could a rock thrown with such intensity just bounce off the window ? I didn't find shattered glass on the outside.

The scalloped edge (as in the last picture with my finger on it) is towards the inside of the house - indicating that the projectile came from the outside. I do have kids but to me, if something was thrown at the window by the kids, then there would be at least one piece of glass on the outside - there was none. All the broken glass was on the inside of the house. There is no lawn mower involved neither from our part of the property nor the neighbours.

What caused this is just perplexing me. Not finding a rock inside the house isn't helping either. At least the nice people here have confirmed this isn't caused by a gun.

Doesn’t look like straight blunt force Impact but more of a ricochet type impact by the oblong shaped hole, I imagine a bullet that was tumbling could of done it but it should of fell close to the area of the window unless it was traveling horizontally, you would think a rock would of left some sort of rock dust behind on the glass. It is a odd looking hole for sure.

G’day happy take a look at this picture of one of the windows in our bedroom. The chip was made by a rock from the lawn mower. Outside smooth except for a slight hole and inside chipped. Someone and by the looks of the photos on the opposite side of the fence threw a rock or something similar. After the destruction I’d say the guilty party would have retrieved the evidence.

If it was made by a bullet it would have gone through the wall behind the glass.
