FX producing "Ratsniper" style slugs

... and they're only 3X the price of NSA. They do perform great and I love the packaging but I don't see 3x more performance to justify the price.

I am not saying anything against the FX Slugs in any way, this comment is simply to address the comment regarding the need for a slug specific liner in order to shoot slugs.

That said, if you go in the hunting section and watch my scope capture video footage you will see that all of those shots were made through my FX Impact X .22 using the stock barrel and stock STX liner. I am flying the Nielsen Speciality Ammo 23 Grain Hollowpoint Slugs .217 Sizing.

The local gun shop owner could not believe the prices for air guns, and accessories. I was showing him the Leshiy, he was interested until I told him it was more than a used Desert Eagle he had in the cabinet. When compared to pellets many different .22 rimfire with brass ,primer, powder, and more lead is less costly than these slugs. I understand the different volume of sales, custom vs mass produced. I think as slugs gain popularity you'll see more of the large distributors like H&N and JSB offer a more cost effective product.

I spoke to Jon at FX-USA prior to the Hybrid-Slug debut. He told me :

  • This project does involve Michael Hossack of Rat Sniper Slugs. But these are made using high speed machines that involve a well known firearm bullet manufacturer, RMR Bullets
  • The Optimum speed to shoot the Hybrids is between 920-940. But results are still very good at lower speeds as well
  • These Hybrid Slugs shoot best out of standard STX pellet liners. Shooters do NOT need to buy a STX Slug liner. Only use standard STX pellet liners for the .22 caliber Hybrid Slugs that are being released
  • We have found these Hybrids do shoot well out of other manufacturers rifles as well. Results may vary and none are as good as out of the FX barrels.

Not needing a new liner might play a factor in some peoples decision making.

A slug liner only costs $109 and shoots everything well. The cost savings using NSA slugs would pay for the slug liner quickly.

True but not everyone has FX rifles. Nsa slugs don’t shoot well in every choked barrel, so it may boil down to these slugs or pellets.

I'm all for free market so if they can sell these at 5x the price of their competition it's smart as long as you don't price yourself out of business. I just hope Mr Nielsen starts using these primer style trays... or I find a different source for them myself. As for slug velocity 1050 is always my goal. I want the flattest trajectory without transonic turbulence.

They do look exactly like the Rat Sniper, which was of the best performing slugs ever out of a FX 600mm slug liner. I talked to Michael way back when about getting more and he said he wasn’t making them any longer. I couldn’t understand why and he wouldn’t elaborate. That would explain a lot!

Cause fx offered him a deal to buy off his deign and he took the deal duh. Now fx owns it

They look very good and the performance seems great. What I think happened is these have been in the pipeline for quite some time when all slugs were about that price that they are charging. Sometime during the design, marketing and production phases, Nick acquired the high speed machines and drastically lowered his price. Perhaps FX was caught flat footed? Especially now that H&N plus JSB will be coming out with slugs to match Nicks prices. I think FX will see the light or it’s easy to see the consequences...

From the mouth of Rat Sniper Mike himself

"As you all know by now, the FX Hybrids are out! Rat Sniper Slugs has teamed up with a local bullet manufacturing company that currently manufactures some of the best match pistol bullets on the planet. Their top machine technician is the one running the high speed machines. We had to have custom machines built to be able to produce this design... it's a much more involved manufacturing process than what it takes to produce a simple hollowpoint.
I have teamed up with FX to utilize their worldwide dealer network and will no longer sell direct. I am manufacturing these exclusively for FX. Just to squash any rumors FX in no way backed me to aquire the machines - it's something I did on my own. I still have full rights over my patent pending hollow core design and I'm directly involved in the manufacturing of these...plus I'm the one packaging these 😁
People tend to forget about our Airgun dealers and it's important they have an opportunity to carry products without having to compete with the manufacturer selling direct too.
If you want to use the highest performing airgun projectile on the planet contact your local dealer and give these a try 👍"

He can't claim the "highest performing" title without a competition to determine the winner.

It's a great product and I love the packaging but I don't think it out performs NSA due to NSA having equal accuracy, higher velocity capability and a being 1/3 the price. I want all the expansion I can get for varmints but you can only kill them so dead. Now the question is which has the most explosive expansion, ratsniper at 940 fps or NSA at 1050. Maybe the ratsniper design can handle more velocity, we'll just have to test and see.

Cost isn’t a “performance” measurement. An impartial comparison is definitely a good idea. Then folks can determine if the cost is worth it compared to the competition.

It is to me. If two products perform equally but one is cheaper, the cheaper one wins. Company performance is just as important as product performance to me. I'm loyal to companies that give me good service. For instance PBA didn't get 700mm slug liners in .22 until 3 weeks after the bigger outlets but I waited for my dealer to get them because that's where I get the best service by far.

I'd like to see a slug category added to benchrest competitions.

Exactly! How many people have paid $2000 + for a PCP air gun and another $400 + for a scope ? You think they are going to quibble about $14 for 100 slugs if the slug performs out of their particular rifle or barrel. I know a lot of people haven’t the means to buy into the higher price guns and every penny matters . There are a lot of 300 to 500 dollar guns that shoot pellets as good as a $3000 rig but not many of these guns are not able to be easily tuned to shoot heavier slugs. Think about it , things have been moving fast the last couple of years regarding slugs in Airguns. The gun manufacturers have had to design more powerful guns for the American market and now we are just seeing pellet manufacturers introducing their slugs. This is just the beginning as JSB and others are working on their versions as well. Their will be various weights to come from all the players too just as there is in pellets. I am very impressed with FX teaming up with Michael at Ratsniper and with Michael partnering with FX. Why do you think FX would do this when we were told that they were designing their barrels using Nielsons slugs. I suggest they (FX) knows how well RS slugs perform in a lot of barrels including their own. You would think they would loose sales on their slug barrels if the RS slugs perform in the standard STX barrels. I have tried all the different slugs over the last 2 years in three different guns , Airforce Condor, Evanex K500 and FX Crown and the Ratsniper slugs in several weights shot more accurately than all. Plus the RS extreme hollow point design is devastating on small game . RS advertised that in 22 their slug would not penetrate a squirrel up to 30 fpe at 15 yards. Well I tested and compaired them with the other Hollow Point slugs and although I did get some pass throughs most of the time they did stay in the body and that means all the Foot Pounds were dumped . All other make slugs I got pass throughs as well as the domed pellets. I think the secret to the RS slugs accuracy is due to the design of the deep hollow point and how the weight or balance of the slug is distributed. Any way hopefully Fx will be lowering the price in the future and they will also be introducing the 25 caliber as my Condor isn’t as fun without them.
