JSB vs Air Arms pellets - Are they the same?

Up until a few days ago, I had always thought that Air Arms pellets were simply re-branded JSB pellets sold at a higher price. I decided to send an email to Claire West (managing director of Air Arms) and find the truth. This was her response:

"Air Arms pellets are different to that of the JSB brand. Whilst JSB do produce them for us, Air Arms have their own dies (purchased by yours truly) which are totally exclusive to us. We are aware that JSB simply re-brand their own pellet, which a number of our competitors sell. However, this is not the case for the AA brand. Whilst it would appear similar, it is not the same. Here in the UK our own branded pellet far out sells the JSB brand. Many target shooters will use nothing but the AA brand. We have 20 FT Team shooters and 18 of them use AA and we have 16 HFT shooters and 14 of them also use the AA brand.
Unfortunately, we have noticed of late, many European companies selling directly to the end user for silly money. In the short term, this is all well and good for them because to them, pellets are a mere commodity to make a quick buck. They have no interest in our sport or in our Industry and are very much likely to damage 'route to market' sooner or later. It just so happens that I am due to fly out to visit JSB next week and one of the points of our discussion will be pricing. I hope that I have answered your question"

I am still trying to make up my mind whether the Air Arms pellets are worth the extra cash. I have noticed that one tin of JSB pellets may contain pellets with a visibly thicker skirt than another tin sold to me in the same order. I have never seen two Air Arms tins with different skirts. I am planning to do some accuracy tests at 100 yards with both AA and JSB pellets to see if the results differ. I will keep you posted on this!

Yup, AA does have reserved dies. The pellets esp. in .22 are total junk, do not buy them.
Okay, I AM kidding but do hope they don't sell enough to wear the die. I use the AA 18.1 (I believe) and nothing else in our .22 rifles, the ORIGINAL JSB 15.9g were second best - but seemed to have changed- and yes I have tried a good number of other pellets. My rather poor memory wants to think I paid a penny or so under $9.00 per tin delivered during some PA sale.

"jamieinmd"In the review by Pyramydair, on the AA S510 Ultimate Sporter, they state that the AA pellets are the same as the JSBs. I now it's stated that they are different and that AA has JSB make them with their own dies to ensure consistency. Just thought I would comment on that before ant confusion starts.
Yes, I saw that review. The pellets are exactly the same in terms of design, and perhaps that what he meant - But the quality control is different.

I paid £16.00 for a tin of AA Field .22 recently which is not cheap, but I was literally stunned by the improvement in accuracy over the brand I was using previously in my Daystate MK4is. These were the 5.51mm size and they are noticeably easier to 'chamber' than 5.52 pellets.
Second best performer of the brands I have now tried was the JSB Exact Express.
Absolutely love the videos Matt!

I have heard it said before that daystates prefer the 5.51 head size. I may be wrong but i think the sovereigns are 5.51 only, to suit daystate barrels

Sorry to come in late on this post, just joined the forum.
I have an AA S410 FAC Extra in .22 and an AA S510 FAC Extra in .25 .
Both these firearms prefer the AA pellets. They both outshoot the JSB's of same weight by a small margin.
However the AA on paper and at random ranged targets are definitely more consistent.

Matt - doing a great job, have learned so much from your You Tube videos.

AA and JSB exact are made in the same factory and are basically the same pellet i was told.

Tried the AA once in the marauder but they where worse (and cost about 50% more in holland). So i never tried them again. I don't think that it is a better pellet but also won't say it is a worse pellet. JSB changed there skirt design a few times over the last few years (see photo skirts in the link) So the same brand pellet will look a little different and may shoot different depending on the batchnumber. I now shoot with batch 40560014. They shoot well in my marauder. Skirt depth is between the batch 2013 and 2014.

But they never should have changed the 2011 design (deep skirt)

AA
- 29 1.4.2014 (6.35 S2 56) Identical to batch JSB 29480214

The only AA pellets I have been using is the AA FT 4,51. They are not the same as the JSB Exact, RS, Express, Premium or Heavy in 4,5x. It's a visual difference between them.
In my Steyr Hunting the AA FT 4,51 and the JSB Exact Premium worked best but the ordinary Exact and the Heavy worked fine as well.
Now to the price picture, in Sweden, where I buy my pellets. Prises in Swedish Kronor, Sek.
JSB Exact, 500 pellets cost 70 Sek.
JSB Heavy, 500 pellets cost 99 Sek.
AA FT 4,51, 500 pellets cost 125 Sek.
JSB Exact Premium, 200 pellets cost 125 Sek.
$1 = 8 Sek
And to all Americans friends, all prices are included sales tax ;-)
