Quick (rushed) Leshiy 2 vs. Impact shoot-out = LOL

[Disclaimer - this is not meant to be a comprehensive / definitive comparison between the accuracy of the Leshiy 2 vs. the Impact . . . instead, it is more of an illustration of how I behave behind the trigger of the Leshiy 2.]

I had a quick 30 minutes to kill before the in-laws were coming over for dinner so I wanted to do a quick shoot-out between the three rifles I've been shooting most regularly:

  • Leshiy 2 0.25 350mm w/ factory long silencer shooting 25.4g JSBs at 800fps
  • Impact 0.25 500mm w/ Superior liner shooting 25.4g JSBs at 900fps
  • Impact 0.22 600mm w/ Slug liner shooting 24.8g NSA 218 slugs at 950fps

All three rifles have been shooting really consistently so the hope was to put up three solid back-to-back-to-back 5 shot groups with each rifle at my 35 yard target to show that, at this range where I will be mostly shooting the Leshiy 2 at, it is every bit as accurate as my Impacts. I was shooting the targets from right to left, resting the rifle on a couple of throw pillows stacked on top of my makeshift shooting table. Conditions were somewhat breezy with the wind going right to left. The bullseyes are 0.5" in diameter and I was aiming at the white center of each bullseye.

It started off well enough, the 0.25 pellet Impact was first and groups were pretty decent with me pulling a shot here or there. The 0.22 Impact was next and this has been the rifle I've been shooting most accurately and groups were again pretty decent but I'm starting to rush a little bit because wife keeps poking her head into my office asking me to finish my to-do's for the meal. Both Impacts did well enough . . . not going to win any competitions with those groups but passable given how quickly they were shot.

Then, it's the Leshiy 2's turn. I don't know if it my wife rushing me or ability of the L2 to go semi-auto or both, but the first three groups were probably fired off in 1/3rd the time it took me to shoot the Impact groups and it showed in the results as the groups opened up noticeably! I told myself to slow down and the 4th group got a little better. Reminded myself yet again and the 5th group became more acceptable - showing that the poor groups were the result of the shooter, not the rifle!

Keep in mind that this L2 has been shooting groups very much on par with the Impacts at this 35 yard target so it is far more capable than these groups today show. I wasn't going to post these groups and try to redo the shoot-out when I had more time and not be so rushed. But I decided to post anyways because this is a funny (and honest) reminder of what the semi-auto function does to your mindset: you can definitely get trigger happy and forget about good shooting fundamentals!

Again, no need to scrutinize the groups below and make any real conclusion on the accuracy of one rifle versus another. I'll redo the shoot-out when I'm not in such a hurry and will have each rifle properly mounted on the Mid-Evil tripod I just got. Hopefully that will provide a more accurate 35 yard comparison between these rifles!

So I finished up my husbandly duties and wanted to sneak in a few more groups before I ran out of daylight. The results below are much more representative of what the L2 can do. I mounted it on the Mid-Evil mini tri-pod and the first group on the right was still a little erratic because I didn't have the mono-pod tightened properly and it was moving around too much. I tightened everything up and the last three groups were much better.

My primary/only use for the L2 is a backpack gun to shoot ground squirrels between 30-50yds and it can do that easily. Here are are the updated groups:

@yenniedn, I do plan as you do, using the Leshiy 2 as a backpack gun and not as a long ranger (past 75 yards) I have an impact and the Taipan Vet for that and something else I am sure will come in the future. However, for the hell of it, I was able to load the Leshiy 2 along with a 1 L bottle and some supplies into my backpack.

Next week i will decide if I am going to USA for a few weeks. If I do head to Idaho, the L2 is coming along with the Taipan Vet and so i will be able to give a “high altitude performance report” on the setup, its functionality and how the L2 manages to take dispatch starlings with extreme prejudice 😑😒😎 even in .177.

Blackpaw - with my old single shot Leshiy Classic 0.25 350mm with aftermarket dual air-tank, I was able to get at least 30 shots per 250bar fill and I never used that many shots in any single backpacking outing. Now, with the 350cc bottle added to the L2, I'm getting about 10 magazines shooting the same 25.4g JSBs as before so if I ever have an outing where I'm able to shoot 80 shots, it will be most amazing hunt ever b/c I will have found the most target rich environment ever!!! I'd also picked up a 1L bottle as well for the very purpose of filling the Leshiy Classic in the field but if I never ran out of air with the Classic, I'm even less likely with the L2 w/ bottle now. Hopefully you'll be able to make the trip back to your old stomping grounds and get some good hunting in!

Great thread! I like seeing realistic everyday groups. All of the groups look like fine hunting/paper groups. It's clear to me all of them can do touching groups when not rushed. I know zero about the L2, but my guess would be the lighter platform is harder to stabilize verses the Impacts.

Thanks and, yes, the L2 and Impact are two very, very different beasts for multiple reasons. I've owned an Impact on and off since it was first released so I've had years of experience handling and shooting them. Both Impacts I own right now have just about every available Saber Tactical or Kraford & Lypt accessory installed to improve the fit, ergonomics and, ultimately, performance of each Impact.

On the other hand, I've only had the Leshiy 2 for about two months and don't know it nearly as well as the Impact. The L2 is a lot more compact and much lighter - and the ergonomics are much different so it'll take some time to get used to. And did I mention it's semi-auto??? This makes it nearly impossible for the average human to resist pulling the trigger as fast as you can just because you can! With the Impact (and most other rifles), you've developed some sort of routine like: load the mag, cock the rifle, aim, breathe, shoot and methodically repeat when ready. With the Leshiy 2, the tendency is: load mag, aim, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot and then the realization that your mag is empty and it's time to insert the next one as quickly as you can so I can fire off 8 more shots! Despite this tendency to rapid fire, you can actually get some pretty nice touching (or even one-hole) groups if you learn how to pull the trigger properly (which most L2 owners are still learning to do).

All that said, at 50yds and in, the Leshiy 2 is everything that I need it to be. I'm sure I could stretch it out to 75yds and beyond but I'll seldomly ever need it to perform at that range so as long as it can consistently and reliably dispatch squirrels within 50yds, I'm perfectly happy.

They are all nice groups, but that .22 impact is an absolute laser. Nice shooting 😃

You're telling me! The 0.22 Impact slugger has been shooting better than the original photo above showed because those groups were hurried. Here's a photo from this morning that better shows what it's capable of when not rushed:

For the last 4-5yrs, I'd gotten rid of all of my 0.22's and was shooting 0.25's only. I'd also never shot slugs before but had a chance to pick this 0.22 slug setup up a couple of months ago. I figured I'd just try it out to satisfy my curiosity and move on - but it'd be foolish to move a rifle that shoots like this as consistently as it does! So to my surprise, the 0.22 slug shooter rightfully earned a space in the safe, which is saying A LOT since I hardly ever want to have two of the same rifle taking up room in my purposely small safe!

In fact, this 0.22 Impact isn't probably even optimally tuned yet! The action came as a 0.30 setup and the 0.22 slug liner/barrel were from a different Impact. All I did was swap out the barrels and raise the reg to 125bar - hammer spring and valve were not adjusted at all. I'm fairly sure that I could further adjust the hammer spring and valve to allow for a lower reg pressure leading to more efficient air use and shot count . . . but, man, I'm afraid I'll mess it up somehow and will never be able to get it back to these groups! :)
