Assuming that the gun could handle the difference in pressure (an issue I intend to solve next), what would happen if I were to buy a refillable 12g Co2 cartridge and fill it with compressed air instead? What would be the risks/benefits? I know there is always a chance something can go wrong. Overfilling the cartridge could cause it to leak or explode. I’m asking for answers aside from the obvious dangers of being stupid or careless.

You would only get 1 shot. Maybe a second reduced power. It's made for about 900psi.. There would be no liquid in it so It wouldn't maintain pressure. Why not just fill it with co2 so it performs properly?

I tried them many years ago yea only few shots stringing straight down a real waste of money IMHO. Better off getting the 12gr co2 adapters and line tether to a regulated Ninja bottle. Yo!

I just learned about these. They’re called dummy carts and my understanding is you can get a lot of shots out of them even without tethering.

If you refill with co2 you will get more shots. Very few shots if you fill with air. As stated above. On a Crosman 22xx you can secure your valve with 3 grade eight #8/32 screws through the tube and pressurize the tube with up to 2000psi and then you will get more shots.

If you want more shots you can do this with paintball parts. I drilled a fake co2 cart to add the tank. Macro line is good for 2500psi and tanks are regulated to 850 - 2000psi.

Thank you for the tip. I was looking at using dummy carts in a semi-auto pellet pistol. For my uses, it needs to be as tactical as possible. Able to pick up, aim and shoot quickly. The problem with Co2 and I imagine any liquid gas is that it cools quickly. So hpa would be better for shooting quickly but also no tactical if I’m only going to get one or two shots. The only thing it saves me filling a dummy with Co2 is not having to buy more cartridges. It doesn’t offer any other advantage that I am looking for. But I do appreciate the info.
