Results Southwest Airgunners Aspen Mtn Match Report for June 2021

We had an Xtremely ambitious plan to pack some serious shooting in one weekend and boy did we ever get it done, quite the airgun saturated weekend!!!

The smiles on these two faces says it all (Kelden and Kent)

Many of us got to camp on Thurs but the course setting got under way on Friday morning, and afternoon. With silhouette, a 13 lane regular field target, and Xtreme field target courses to set, we were BUSY. After my son and I got settled down to sleep Friday night, out of the blue he commented, "dad, I'm pretty tired tonight." Me too buddy, me too.

Breakdown of the weekends events:

Friday evening = sub 20fpe silhouettes

Saturday morning = 52 shot regular field target

Saturday during lunch = sub 20fpe COVID Challenge

Saturday afternoon = 40 shot Xtreme Field Target

Saturday evening = high power COVID Challenge

Silhouette Match

Colbens first time shooting silhoutte. He did pretty good for a 7 year old out to 70 yards. I was most happy with him for not getting the turret messed up, not shooting the wrong targets, or shooting any targets out of order.

Field Target

We set up a 52 shot match, in typical Aspen Mtn fashion (long distance between shooting stations, 13 lanes, interesting target placement, challenging but fun).

Some set-up pics...

Covid Challenge

The winners of each COVID Challenge received certificates for custom scope wheel packages from JD's Custom Design. Thank you very much for sponsoring the event!

jd.1623741321.jpg

The premise here was simple. Place the COVID target out to 55 yards and let everybody take one shot. Those that knock it down advance to the next round, but first a smaller kill zone is swapped onto the target. Steve Q won the sub 20 fpe challenge after being the only person able to knock down the second target. I believe there were 7 or 8 that knocked it down the first time, but only Steve Q got the smaller kz in round two.

This is what the target looked after the last round of the high power COVID challenge. I had left by this time but I understand Sandy won a scope wheel certificate. She told me later that she was eager to get JD to make her a wheel for her Athlon Midas Tac. That seems like a mighty small kill zone. I think I was told it was a 1/2 inch.

Xtreme Field Target (I was told to start dropping the "E" cuz nothing about XFT is easy.)

We set 5 lanes here, and shot through twice to make the possible score a 40.

A little experiment here to keep the paddle visible. Seemed to work well on the larger KZ targets.

We used the timers and had 3 minutes to take 4 shots. The timers really add a cool element to the competition. I'd personally like to see timers used at monthly regular FT matches more often as they truly add some extra excitement to an event.

scoreboard.1623742854.jpg

Talk about a 180 degree different environment in which to be shooting XFT, compared to the desert down at Phoenix Rod and Gun club where all the monthly winter XFT matches have been held. Very enjoyable match.

I heard some comments that it seemed easier than matches down at Phoenix Rod and Gun so I worked up the numbers.

Average Near distance = 46.4 yards

Average Far distance = 74.6 yards

Highest Extreme Troyer = 49 (1” @ 4 9 yards on lane 2) I wanted to see hit rates on this target but many of the scorecards don't say what lane people started on so I couldn't calculate them.

Furthest target = 3” @ 93 yards on lane 4

Overall Extreme Troyer Factor = 33.32 (ETF only takes into account the kill zone size and distance. This number is actually quite comparable to matches we shot at PHX Rod and Gun all winter. Just goes to show how much harder it is to knock down long range field targets in an environment with very little vegetation to give hints about what the wind is doing (like at PHX Rod and Gun). Up here near Aspen Mtn the trees and grass gave lots of visual cues about what the wind was doing out at the targets.

Van's van (well trailer really)

Van has been renovating this van for nearly a year. And it turned out awesome. The detail in the exterior paint is pretty impressive. It has cool scenery from all over the state of Arizona (Weaver's Needle, Four Peaks, Monument Valley, etc). The inside is pretty amazing too. Great job Van. I think we should call it the field target mobile.

And finally,

Huge thank you to Rex, Steve Q, and Ben for running all of the above super-fun insanity. Marathon weekend of airguns and every bit of it was great. Also, huge thank you to Airguns of Arizona for donating prize money and to JDs Custom Design for donating the scope wheel prize packages. Those types of donations create excitement around events and that is a good thing, for all of us. Thank you to everyone who attended, I enjoyed the time with all of you. Congrats to the winners, some crazy-good scores were turned in, especially when taking the difficulty into consideration, truly impressive shooting.

and finally finally,

We had a couple new shooters, Larry and Will. Both decided to fully commit to the weekend and they were camping with all of us diehards. Was great to get to know those two and hope to see them at future field target events. To anybody interested, come on out-it'll be worth it.

GREAT report again, Cole !

A HUGE thank you to you, Rex, Steve, Dan, Colben, Kent, and BEN for the effort you all put in to make it so enjoyable !!! Two great courses !!

Also THANK YOU to AOA and JDS Custom Design for their donations!!! We do take note and appreciate!

It was a seriously packed day. I think some were so tired on the second round of the Xft that they lost focus a little. Everyone I chatted with were BEAT at the end of it all. GREAT day, though. We definitely got some shooting in.

Sandy definitely had a great time on the XCovid Challenge. She was beat, then had a sip of wine and got the second wind going. Pretty amazing shooting ! Abbi and Kent hung in there pretty well on that, too👍💥.

Sorry that Sandy and I couldn't get there early enough to help. I know you could have used more. We were also sad to miss the Silhouette. Definitely a fun event and Congratulations on your perfect score !! There haven't been many of those and to do it after such a BIG effort on the setup is HUGE.

Great venue and thanks again to all that helped,

Bob

I'd like to thank Rex, Steve Q, Ben and all the other nice folks I met this weekend for the great time I had!

I'm not new to air guns but this was the first time I have attended a FT event and it was a blast (pun intended) 😊. I did not have my own gun in time for the event but I am fortunate enough to be friends with Rex who generously let me have full use of two of his primo rifles so I would be able to shoot the event. A big thank you to Rex for that.

Everyone was very welcoming and were quick to give "the newb" tips and guidance to help me out. It was the most fun with an air rifle I've had in quite a while. I look forward to doing this again.

I was lucky enough to win a great gift certificate for a "Scope Wheel Package" from JD's Custom Design which I'm really looking forward to using soon.

I'd like to thank JD's, Airguns of Arizona and the other sponsors and folks that put on this great event! It was really fun and I'd encourage anyone that can to attend; it was great!

Larry

Any reason why the shooters didn't use any model of FX guns ?

Regards

While many of us own FX airguns, I would guess that most that were at this match have found more reliable and appropriate airguns for this competition. Myself... I've had a good number of FX and most were pleasant and on some days, accurate. When you shoot a Thomas, USFT, RAW, or Daystate for competition, worrying about poi shifting is mostly history. I know plenty of people believe in them.... I just never found any but the Royale truly dependable. And in spite of what some think of me, I'd rather shoot than tinker.

Bob

Thanks to all of the fabulous people I met and shot with over the weekend, especially Cole who took me under his wing and guided me through the whole bewildering process, even letting me shoot his amazing Mac, Ben for his generosity with his BSA and Steve Q, for patiently explaining some basics until I somehow grasped them. Bobby C was a font of knowledge and has helped me previously, so he may not know what he’s in for in the future…

The whole group could not have been more welcoming to both of us and I really appreciate it. What a fortunate coincidence that this event coincided with a trip we already had planned and was right on the way to our destination. I’m ready this morning to put into practice some of the knowledge I gained and I (almost) feel sorry for the prairie dogs… the rancher where we’re shooting was really happy that I showed up with a couple of air rifles because he has a piece of land with nearby houses that he hasn’t wanted to let anyone shoot powder burners on. Says the PDs are “really dumb”!

Big thanks to AOA for sponsoring the event and for patiently putting up with me (and selling me a ton of stuff) over the last several months and to JD for donating his wheels (now I know what those things are for).

Will M

Thanks for taking the time to do such a thorough report Cole. I love how you write and reading it brings me right back to the venue. We had a great time. I wish I would have shot better as I’m sure you do to. Sometimes that’s the way it goes. I want to congratulate Bobby on a great job. He shot really well and despite the long day he hung in there really well. Not sure where his second wind came from for the XFT but he shot really well. It was such a shame that he forgot to adjust his turret on the last lane. I really think he would have been able to clean the second round on the last course. Missing only 3 is still fantastic.

I know we’ve said it before but I have to say it again, thanks to everyone for all the hard work getting this shoot put together. Also, thanks to AOA and JDS Custom Designs for their sponsorship. I have put Bobby in charge of collecting on my scope wheel. I have always wanted one now I get to see if I like it. That’s pretty cool. I also want to thank Bobby for making sure my rifles are always in good working order. If I was only as good as the rifle we would be unstoppable. Ruby and Hugh are great rifles and shoot phenomenal. It was a great pleasure to shoot Wally (Bobby’s Redwolf) in the COVID challenge and win. A great time was had by all. It was good to see Abby again and gave the girls battling it out, (Kent too). It would be nice to see more women shooting. All you newbies coming with your wives need to get them a rifle so they can join us.

Hope to see you all next month, until then stay safe and have fun.

Sandy

Aimright,

I usually arrive a couple days early and set targets out from 10-55yds and check my dope. Sometimes I have to give a click or two to get my dope on bullseye but that is the most. Ironically, for my 22HP, I shot for Xtreme 25-100, I did not change anything. I was shooting my same dope from Phoenix, 1100 ft up to 8600 ft and I was using the same dope....go figure.

Thx

Dan

Thanks Dan! I had taken my gun up the White Mountains in April and did a little casual target shooting at 8400 feet and it seemed like I was shooting pretty high on most, particularly the ones past my zero if I recall correctly. I use Strelok but was in an area with no cell service and was unable to get local weather and pressure, but I do wonder if I had current weathers obs if Strelok would have recalibrated the trajectory accurately at that elevation.

Apologies to Cole for hijacking this thread a bit. I will quit here and maybe start a new thread.
